Is Iranian Minister Eskandar Momeni coming to India after visiting Pakistan? What we know so far | Today’s news
Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and his delegation will travel to India after visiting Pakistan to attend a meeting of BRICS member countries, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday.
Momeni, who arrived in Islamabad on Monday, met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday. Earlier, he held talks with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, Iran’s Mehr News reported. He also held bilateral talks with his Pakistani counterpart Seyed Mohsin Naqvi.
Eskandar Momeni to visit India soon?
After his engagement in Pakistan, Momeni is expected to travel to New Delhi at the invitation of his Indian counterpart, ISNA reports reported on July 20.
The minister is scheduled to attend the BRICS ministerial meeting on disaster management on July 24. The meeting will focus on regional disaster risk reduction strategies.
However, there was no official confirmation from India about the visit of the Iranian delegation.
About the BRICS meeting in Delhi
The third meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is being held in Delhi on 22-23 July, followed by the BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management on 24 July.
The meetings provide a platform for BRICS member countries to deepen cooperation on disaster risk reduction, resilience and coordinated approaches to disaster management.
Also National Disaster Management Authority confirmed that India will be on 22-24 July 2026 to host the third meeting of the BRICS Technical Group on Disaster Risk Reduction in New Delhi.
“#BRICS2026 nations will jointly expand cooperation for a more resilient future under the theme: ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability (sic),'” the company posted on Facebook.
Iran-American War
Momeni’s visit comes amid an escalating conflict between the US and Iran. Iran’s military said on Wednesday that drones attacked US military facilities at Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan and Isa Air Base in Bahrain, Iran International reported.
Separately, the IRNA news agency reported: “The army of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in the twenty-first phase of Operation Thunder, attacked the units of the American terrorist army on the garrison of Al-Doha in Kuwait with the help of drones.
It added: “Al-Doha is one of the most important and major US military bases in western Kuwait and a support hub for US forces stationed in West Asia. It hosts a large number of US military equipment and personnel, along with naval and air forces.” The Iranian attack came after the US “successfully completed an 11th consecutive night of strikes against Iran”.
The U.S. Central Command said: “CENTCOM assets have targeted Iran’s military operations centers, naval capabilities, aircraft hangars, drone storage facilities, and military logistics infrastructure to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.”
“Over the past three months, Iran has attacked more than 30 commercial vessels plying an international waterway vital to regional and global trade. Unauthorized attacks have endangered hundreds of innocent seafarers and undermined freedom of navigation,” he added.
“Despite Iranian aggression, the Strait of Hormuz remains open to commercial vessel transit. Since early May, CENTCOM forces have helped facilitate the transit of approximately 900 commercial vessels and 450 million barrels of oil,” US forces said in a post on X on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, which previously brokered a truce between the US and Iran, is working to prevent the collapse of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last month. The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding is a 14-point interim peace agreement aimed at ending the war between Iran and the US.
