Iran is pushing to move the matches
The Iranian Football Federation is in talks with FIFA to move its matches to Mexico. The head of the federation, Mehdi Taj, made their position clear, saying: “When (US President Donald) Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America.” “We are currently in talks with FIFA to host Iran’s matches at the World Cup in Mexico,” he added.Iran are currently scheduled to play matches in the United States, including matches against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt. But officials worry about security and logistical issues, including visa issues.
FIFA reacts, tensions rise
FIFA has confirmed it is in contact with Iran, but has yet to agree to any changes. A spokesman said: “FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including IR Iran, to discuss planning for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.” He added: “FIFA looks forward to all participating teams competing in the fixture list announced on 6 December 2025.”Iran’s concerns have grown following comments from Donald Trump, who said the team would be welcome but warned they should not travel “for their own lives and safety”. Iran pushed back strongly, declaring that “no one can exclude the Iranian national team from the World Cup”.With the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel and Iran, the situation remains uncertain and it is still unclear what will happen if Iran ultimately decides not to participate.
