Gujarat Titans, much like the Punjab Kings, seem to have forgotten the most famous childhood cricket mantra – “Got to catch ’em all!” On Saturday evening 16 May at the iconic Eden Gardens this lapse proved costly as GT lost four vital catchesallowing the Kolkata Knight Riders batsmen to escape pressure situations and develop into match-turning monsters in a high-stakes encounter.
KKR vs GT, IPL 2026: Highlights | Scorecard
“I think our fielding could have been a lot better. When we were three runs down in a game like that, I don’t think we deserved to win,” were GT skipper Shubman Gill’s first few remarks after their 30-run defeat by KKR.
GT’s catch drop was the franchise’s highest in a single IPL innings. It also marked their seventh such instance of multiple missed chances in an IPL match, underscoring a recurring problem in their fielding standards. In a competition where the margins are razor thin, GT were once again reminded that missed chances can be just as damaging as poor batting or bowling.
KKR’S BATTING ‘MONSTERS’ PUNISH GT’S MISTAKES
The match had already taken a major turn as KKR posted a daunting target of 247 runs against the playoff chasing GT team. The innings was fueled by aggressive contributions from Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green, who all benefited from the crucial reprieve offered by the GT fielders.
Allen, who ended up smashing a devastating 93 off just 35 balls, was given two lifelines. The first came at 14 when a tough chance collapsed at extra cover, with Jason Holder unable to hold on despite a full stretch effort. The second and more costly one came in the seventh over when Mohammed Siraj dropped a regulation catch when Allen was on 33. The moment proved decisive as Allen immediately shifted gears and launched a brutal assault on the GT bowling attack, particularly targeting Arshad Khan, taking 22 runs off one of his overs.
By the time Allen was finally dismissed, the damage had already been done and KKR were well on their way to a huge total that would ultimately affect the outcome of the match.
Raghuvanshi and Green then ensured there was no respite for GT. The duo put together a devastating 108-run partnership, with both batsmen also benefiting from wasted chances at crucial points. Raghuvanshi, who remained unbeaten on 82 off 44 balls, was dismissed immediately after bringing up his seventh IPL half-century. The missed opportunity allowed him to continue the attack and stabilize KKR’s innings through the middle overs.
Green also got a reprieve when Arshad Khan dropped him for 23 off just 12 deliveries. He made full use of the extra life to register his fourth IPL fifty in just 26 balls, adding to GT’s woes in the field.
GT PAYS FOR SINKING IN THE FIELD
“I think catching is something that obviously made a huge difference. When you play high-scoring games against quality batsmen, you don’t get many opportunities. Once you get that opportunity, you have to make sure you take advantage of it and I thought that was the difference,” GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel said after the match.
While GT kept creating chances, they were unable to convert them while KKR were clinical in the field and made sure they grabbed every opportunity that came their way. This contrast in fielding proved decisive in a match dominated by batting fireworks.
The defeat also ended GT’s five-game winning streak and leaves their playoff qualification scenario hanging in the balance. They now have a must-win game against Chennai Super Kings on May 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to book a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.
For KKR, meanwhile, the win keeps their slim playoff hopes alive. The defending champions are now seventh in the points table with 11 points and two games remaining. While their chances of qualification remain slim, the win provides a glimmer of hope in an otherwise inconsistent campaign.
In a match defined by explosive batting and missed opportunities, GT suffered a familiar tale of dropped catches proving as costly as the runs they conceded.
