The co -owner of Kings Kings Punjab Mohit Burman believes that the Indian Premier League should be extended to the 12-16 week season if it wants to match the value of the best global sports league brand, such as the National Football League (NFL and NBA.
Burman believes that a longer season would help build stronger rivalry, richer stories and deeper involvement of fans-all is essential for long-term growth. He also emphasized the importance of a pure global window where the best players can be available without international obligations.
“We are in the second place in terms of value for the match, just behind the NFL. But the total value of the brand? This is another game. I think we need a 12-16 week window to get there,” said PBKS and India chairman Dabur Burman to PTI.
“That gives us room for telling better stories, building rivalry and creating more value for all – fans, sponsors, transmitters. But it’s not just a length. It’s about what we do at that time – the type of content we push, how we do fans throughout the year.
He pointed out that the dominance of IPL in cricket should not lead to satisfaction. Instead, the league must continue to evolve in terms of fans’ experiences, content and global importance. Burman believes that it would focus on building an IPL character from India, rather than on the league abroad.
“IPL is already the largest cricket product in the world, but staying there means that nothing prevents for granted. The availability of the player is essential. We need a clean window where the best in the world can play without restrictions,” he added.
He also supported the growing trend of IPL franchise owners who invested in foreign leagues such as CPL, ILT20 and STO. According to him, it helps to create a consistent team identity across formats and geographies in brand scaling and ensuring long -term sustainability.
Kings Pandjab, who got to the finals this season for more than a decade, has seen commercial profits from their success in the field. The franchise has seen a year -on -year increase in income by 25%, emphasizing how strong performances directly lead to the interest of fans and sponsors.
