Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has finally joined the Kolkata Knight Riders camp and provided a much-needed boost to the off-season side at a crucial stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The franchise shared visuals of the fast bowler’s arrival, ending days of uncertainty over his availability and offering an early boost ahead of their clash with Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Pathirana’s late arrival was due to injury. He suffered a left calf strain during Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year, which ruled him out of action and delayed his entry into the IPL. He remained under the supervision of Sri Lanka Cricket during his rehabilitation, meaning KKR had to wait long after the start of the season for one of their key bowling reinforcements.
The wait dragged on Pathirana needed to clear the fitness protocols of Sri Lankan cricket and obtain a no-objection certificate before traveling to India. KKR coach Abhishek Nayar had earlier hinted at a return in mid-April and that timeline has now been met with the pacer joining the team.
The franchise confirmed the development on Sunday, adding that Pathirana underwent a mandatory fitness test before being cleared to join the team. He linked up with the team ahead of their game against Rajasthan Royals, though he is unlikely to feature right away. Team management is expected to assess his match fitness over the next few practices.
Pathirana, who was bought for Rs 18 crore in the IPL auction, was always expected to miss the opening phase of the tournament due to injury. He was originally supposed to join before KKR’s clash against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, but the timeline was pushed.
His return is a relief for KKR, who are still looking for their first win after six matches and remain at the bottom of the table. The side struggled in the pace department, especially in the death overs, and Pathiran’s absence was felt.
Known for his snappy action and ability to execute yorkers under pressure, Pathirana adds another dimension to KKR’s attack. He has been brought in to handle the closing overs, an area where the team has lacked control so far this season.
KKR head into the match against Rajasthan Royals under pressure after a losing streak. While Pathirana alone cannot solve all their problems, he gives skipper Ajinkya Rahane another pace option and a key-moment specialist.
There is still some distance between joining a team and being ready for a match. The team will monitor his workload and fitness before bringing him into the playing eleven. Still, his arrival comes at an important time for a side looking to turn their season around.
