The Crybeard Council in India (BCCI) plans to expand the Indian Premier League by 20 other matches, revealed the chairman of IPL ARUN Dhumal. In an interview with Espncricinfo Dhumal, he said that changes can be made by 2028, when another cycle of media rights begins.
IPL is the hottest real estate in the world cricket with a dedicated window in the Future Council Tours program (FTP). IPL changes would certainly affect the international calendar. For example, in 2024, players had to rush at the US and the Caribbean Islands for the T20 World Cup, so there is very little time to prepare as a team.
In the interview, Dhumal confirmed the development and explained the justification. Currently, the IPL table is divided into two groups: A and B. Teams in Group and Play 2 matches against each other and one match each against group B.
Now the idea is to give teams a complete schedule of home and start, which in 2028 will increase the number of games by 20 more.
“Definitely that it could be an opportunity. We discussed it in ICC, discussing internally in BCCI. Given the interest of fans with regard to bilateral and ICC events, with a franchise cricket and cricket T20, we have to talk more seriously and see how we can create maximum value for the participating games.
“Ideally, we would like a larger window, or maybe they went from 74 to 84 or 94 at some point, so each team will play against each team and away. You need 94 games for that,” he added.
Landscape shift
The world cricket showed signs of the transition towards the franchise system. Not only India, but Australia, Pakistan, England, South Africa and even the United States have domestic franchise T20 tournaments. Dhumal said that IPL 94 matches will not be possible as a short -term goal and that BCCI will call for the viability of the plan in the coming years.
“Given the window and the type of commitments we have with regard to the bilateral cricket and ICC events, it may not be in the short term. But due to the landscape, as it changes and develops over the years, perhaps we will look for and take advantage of this option at some point.
“There was so much cricket: we returned from Australia from the test series, we had this trophy of champions and we also have this IPL. Therefore it was decided that there was no point in going from 74 to 84 (in 2025), but whenever time we are convenient, we take it,” IPL chairman.
