Saturday was not a runner’s feast in Jaipur and New Delhi. After Punjab Kings scored the highest run total in the Indian Premier League (IPL) against Delhi Capitals in a 500-plus run match, Jaipur witnessed Rajasthan Royals prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s second hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi witnessed 529 runs scored, including 152 not out from the Indian opener, several batting blitzkriegs, a nasty head injury and plenty of dropped catches. It all started with KL Rahul. After the departure of Pathum Nissank, Rahul along with Nitish Rana put on 220 runs for the second wicket to power Delhi Capitals to 264/2.
In the process, Rahul became the first Indian to score more than 150 in an IPL game. Rana, on the other hand, missed a well-deserved hundred – 91 off just 44 balls. But that wasn’t all. In response, Punjab Kings went off on a tumultuous note before the game was stopped for 14 minutes.
Lungi Ngidi’s nasty head injury
A misjudged catch by Punjab Kings batsman Priyank Arya proved costly for Lungi Ngidi as the South African hit his head hard on the ground as he fell. After a brief interaction with the team physio, Ngidi was lying on the ground, holding his head and barely moving. The Delhi Capitals pitcher was taken to the hospital by ambulance, delaying the game by 15 minutes.
However, the good news is that Ngidi is stable and will be released soon. “Delhi Capitals’ Lungisani Ngidi hit his head on the ground while trying to make a catch during his team’s match against Punjab Kings. He was taken to hospital by ambulance complaining of headache and neck pain. Ngidi is stable and will be released from the hospital soon,” read the IPL X post (formerly Twitter).
What followed was nothing short of a fairy tale. Prabhsimran Singh set the platform for the chase with a 26-ball 76, followed by skipper Shreyas Iyer’s match-winning 36-ball 71 in the 19th over. The previous highest run chase in IPL history also belongs to Punjab Kings when they chased down 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi lights up the sky of Jaipur
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s century came in vain as Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Rajasthan Royals by five wickets. Suryavanshi scored his second IPL hundred – a 37-ball 103 – as Rajasthan Royals posted a strong 228/6 after being put in to bat first.
Suryavanshi got a lot of support from Dhruv Jurel, who played a 35-ball 51 to help the teenager milk 112 runs for the second wicket. Donovan Ferreira (33) played some big shots in the death overs for Rajasthan Royals.
But Sunrisers Hyderabad were chasing a target of 229 with nine balls to spare and Ishan Kishan was top scorer with 74 off 31 balls. Abhishek Sharma came in with 57 off 29 deliveries.
