MS Dhoni (Image credit: CSK/IPL) As Chennai Super Kings prepare to face Mumbai Indians at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on April 23, 2026, the biggest question surrounding the clash is simple: Will MS Dhoni return to action? The final decision on Dhoni’s participation will not be made until just before the draw on the day of the match. Although he has yet to be officially confirmed in the starting eleven, there are encouraging signs that suggest his return could be imminent. Dhoni is actively training at the Wankhede and spends almost 40 minutes on intensive batting and wicket practice. His presence in full training sessions indicates steady progress and has boosted hopes in the CSK camp.Fitness update and medical clearanceCSK bowling consultant Eric Simons has made it clear that Dhoni will play only if he and the medical staff are fully satisfied with his fitness. The veteran is recovering from a calf strain that kept him out of the first six games of the season.

Stephen Fleming on CSK’s overhaul, pressure player rule and impact on bowling “The decision on him (Dhonim) will be taken tomorrow by him and the medical staff if he is absolutely ready to go,” Simmons said on the eve of the match.Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad also confirmed that Dhoni is “slowly and steadily” returning to full fitness, adding that the injury occurred during a team practice when Dhoni felt discomfort while running.“We played a practice match; then he (MS Dhoni) broke his calf and then he wasn’t able to run as comfortably as he wanted and I think after that it was just about seeing some of the youngsters playing in practice games or in match simulations where he felt confident enough about them, who are ready and who have that ability to play in the IPL. And slowly, slowly and slowly, it was there. You know, maybe next game, maybe after that, but definitely one day for sure.” Gaikwad said.
Likely role if he plays
Even if Dhoni is declared fit, he may not take on the full workload immediately. He is expected to feature as an Impact Player, allowing the team to carefully manage his fitness while still benefiting from his experience and finishing ability. Sanju Samson has been handling the wicketkeeping duties in his absence but the team is keen on Dhoni’s return to provide experience to the team which is currently 8th in the points table.
