Vikram Solanki on GT strategy, pitch and team decisions“He is such a team-oriented guy, MS Dhoni. He always wants the best for the team and he was afraid that if he came, it would be too much of a distraction,” Hussey said.“Obviously there would be a lot of cameras on him. The crowd would be cheering for him and things like that. And he really wanted the team to just be able to do their job, do our thing.”Despite being part of the squad since the pre-season, Dhoni has yet to feature in a single match. His absence on match days, Hussey stressed, was a deliberate attempt to keep the focus firmly on the playing group.“Whether it is right or wrong, it is not my decision but it is behind the thinking that Dhoni does not want to come to the matches,” he added.Focus on recovery, not attentionWhile staying away from the trenches, Dhoni remained actively involved behind the scenes, regularly attending training sessions and interacting with the players.Hussey also gave a positive update on Dhoni’s recovery, suggesting a return could be imminent – although no firm timetable has been set.“Hopefully he’ll be back as soon as possible. I don’t know if it’ll be tomorrow or maybe the next game after that, but he’s progressing really well,” he said.“I know he’s been increasing his run rate and that’s probably been the problem point. I think we’re very confident skill-wise with his batting and his wicket.“He’s just making sure he can maintain good running power … so once he gets the confidence in his calf, then I’m sure he’ll give him the signal to be ready to go,” he explained.
