Mitchell Santner and Mahela Jayawardene The one-sided clash at the Wankhede Stadium became a major talking point after Mumbai Indians used a concussion substitute during their 103-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026.While Sanju Samson’s unbeaten century and Akeal Hosein’s four-wicket haul led CSK to an impressive victory, the focus shifted to Shardul Thakur’s unusual performance as a concussion replacement for Mitchell Santner.

Shardul for Santner: MI coach Jayawardene explains the decision
Santner suffered the injury in the 17th over while completing a low catch, apparently hurting his shoulder. However, records later indicated that his head also touched the ground. He was subsequently taken for a scan and did not return to the field.MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene defended himself on the controversy.“Santner first hit his head, neck and of course his shoulder. After that he went for a scan. Once he came back he was lying down. Yes, there was ice on his shoulder but he felt it was not stable so we took him for a scan in that situation,” Jayawardene said.“We asked for concussion. It’s at the discretion of the match referee and umpires. They allowed Shardul Thakur. That’s what it is. But hopefully Santner’s injury is not too bad. Once he comes back, we’ll look at it,” he added. However, the explanation did little to quell the debate, with many questioning whether a visible shoulder injury warranted concussion compensation.
IPL 2026 Rules vs Reality: The decision raises eyebrows
As per IPL rules, teams must nominate potential concussion replacements before the match, which include roles such as batsman, bowler and all-rounder. The final challenge rests on a refereeing match to ensure an equal exchange.Despite this framework, the optics of the situation – especially when Santner was later seen wearing a shoulder strap – sparked widespread debate.

The fight against MI continues despite the positives
Apart from this controversy, MI endured another disappointing outing. “We have only got four points from seven games. We are disappointed to lose this game,” admitted Jayawardene.“In the two overs alone, we lost our rhythm, first with the ball and then with the bat… We all have to improve as a team.He also reflected on the decision to chase: “We discussed chasing and we felt good. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.”Jayawardene found a silver lining in young Allah Ghazanfar when he said: “He is very brave and he will mature with time… we will support him.”As CSK climbed the IPL 2026 table with a dominant win, MI were left with not just defeat – but a decision that sparked one of the biggest debates of the season.
