Vaibhav Sooryavanshi easily took down a who’s who of the best bowling talent in IPL 2026
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, all of 15, is fast becoming an enigma – right now in IPL 2026, but also in the world of cricket. The insane level of hitting from a teenager at this age defies belief and now that he is making his way into the record books with every passing innings, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s aura is unmistakable.Comparisons abounded – when was the last time a 15-year-old was lauded like this? It is Sachin Tendulkar. But even the big man at 15 wouldn’t have the numbers to show that this youngster from Tajpur in Bihar’s Samastipur district has racked up.‘Youngest to’, ‘Fastest to’, ‘Scripts history’ all abound with anything written about him, talked about during IPL 2026. Former cricketers turned pundits and analysts are clamoring at the top of their lungs to hand the youngster a debut in India, while some don’t care, like Ra Ashhand. It’s not a matter of if, but when – and when he does, just enjoy the show. The question when someone is doing well in the IPL or any domestic set-up and gets calls for an international/senior debut is often: can he step up? How will he cope when his skills are tested against international quality, scrutinized for obvious weaknesses and whether he has the mental strength to handle the pressure at the highest level? That’s a good question. Many came in with a chip on their shoulder and faltered – big hype, hard fall.Even in this regard, however, Sooryavanshi appears to be a cut above the rest, or rather cut from a completely different cloth. For example, in the IPL, even with the best players teams can conjure up, there is always a weak link – or rather a space or two that the opposition can exploit. From a batsman’s point of view, you can face two or three quality overseas bowlers, throw in one or two Indian internationals and then there will be a home bowler – a young upstart or a journeyman. Therein lies the opportunity. But in the case of Sooryavanshi, it didn’t really matter at all. What’s more, it aced this test like no other. Almost like using cheats in EA Sports Cricket 07.
Taking on the best in the most brutal way
Consider this: in his two seasons in the IPL (IPL 2025 and IPL 2026), Sooryavanshi has so far faced Matt Henry, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pat Cummins and Jan Singh Singh, Arshde Marcon. And only Rabada came back somewhat unscathed against Sooryavanshi’s onslaught, with Sooryavanshi hitting just 125. Every other international bowler Sooryavanshi gave more than 200 strikes, except Siraj, against whom he scored an impressive 170.

There are no watchers against dating elite names, no respect for pedigree, just instant intent. First ball six against Bumrah, another against Boult and the same audacity against Cummins. Hazlewood’s first over off Sooryavanshi was 4, 4, 4, 6. Bhuvneshwar Kumar got four strikes off the first ball he bowled, while Arshdeep Singh was greeted with 6, 4, 4 in his very first over. Even Sunil Narine’s art and Siraj’s pace didn’t stop him – both took over almost immediately. And when Ferguson came on steam last night, Sooryavanshi fell for 4, 4, 6 in his opening burst. And overall, among all the bowlers he has faced in the IPL so far, Reading looks even more impressive. Only against Mohsin Khan and Narine Sooryavanshi did he fail to break the shackles, while Rashid Khan and Prasidh Krishna had a more even match against the young Turk.

Not just reckless strikes
And to many, it may look like the young batsman is pouncing on shots early, bordering on reckless hitting. But is it so? Sooryavanshi’s mindset is clear – he has the credentials to go from the very start, can back it up with his power and length estimation and follows the thought process of playing the ball rather than a bowler. However, technical aspects also play in his favor. Simply put, Sooryavanshi is just harder to deal with. And what makes it difficult? Simple – the balls that are supposed to keep the batter still, just don’t work for it. As cricket data analyst Himanish Ganjoo explained on the ESPNcricinfo podcast: “For an average batter, the rate of good strike length is about 130. For Vaibhav, it’s more than 200.”In other words, the length bowlers rely on most to control runs is the exact area in which they score freely. And if bowlers miss just a little bit and land fuller, it gets worse. “He’s batting 400 in the slot,” Ganjoo said. Therefore, he feels that there is no safe option against him. What really sets him apart is how he does it. Ganjoo points out that he hits good length balls much more often than other batsmen and even pulls balls from shorter lengths than usual – an area where most players struggle. Sooryavanshi reads the length early, gets into position quickly and has the bat speed to still hit it hard even when the ball isn’t there to hit. His high lift and quick hands mean he can generate power from almost anywhere. Most batsmen have at least one weakness – short-pitch delivery, back of length, swing – but with Sooryavanshi, those usual plans don’t seem to work. It makes him feel different from everyone else. And a look at his delivery pattern also suggests that the bowler can rarely rush Sooryavanshi’s pace and rarely misses the line of the ball. Of the 16 times he was dismissed, Sooryavanshi was bowled twice and lbw once. Two of those dismissals came after he had already scored 101 and 103.Of his four single-figure dismissals in the IPL so far, only his dismissal against SRH by Praful Hinge in IPL 2026, where he appeared to be overpowered by the extra bounce while attempting a flick towards the cow corner, stands out. The remaining three were caused by Sooryavanshi’s own fake shots, the rarest so far.
