Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined Rs 24 crore after his side was found guilty of maintaining a slow overplay during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This was PBKS’ second IPL Code of Conduct offense of the season.
According to Article 2.22, the punishment did not end with the captain. The rest of the playing XI, including Impact Player Priyansh Arya, were also hit with a fine of Rs 6 crore or 25 per cent of the match fees, whichever is lower, adding to the costly exit despite the dominant win.
PBKS vs CSK, IPL 2026: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD
Despite the setback off the pitch, PBKS performed superbly on the pitch, comfortably chasing the target of 210 runs against CSK. It was a result that highlighted both their batting depth and attacking approach, although the slow overs slightly dampened the aftermath of an otherwise dominant night.
IS SHREYAS IYER FACED BAN?
Despite this being Punjab’s second slow offense of the season, Iyer will not face a suspension even if the team commits further infractions in the upcoming matches. This is largely due to a key rule change introduced by the IPL ahead of the 2025 season.
The tournament scrapped the earlier provision of a one-match ban for captains after three overpriced offenses in a season. Instead, punishments are now limited to fines and field restrictions, reducing the immediate risk of suspension for repeat offences.
However, a wider system is now in place. The IPL has aligned its code of conduct with the ICC by introducing demerit points. Any penalty awarded by the match referee results in a point being added to the player’s or official’s record which remains valid for 36 months. Accumulating these points over time can still lead to suspensions, making discipline a long-term issue rather than an immediate one.
HOW PBKS thrashed CSK AT HOME
While PBKS bowling will take some lessons to build on, their batting has been nothing to complain about. Chasing the 210 made it look a lot easier than it was, thanks to a no-nonsense approach from the get-go.
Priyansh Arya set the tone with a blistering 39 off just 11 balls, immediately putting CSK under pressure and ensuring the required pace never got out of hand.
From there, Iyer took charge and anchored the innings with a composed half-century. His knocking combined with aggressive intent throughout the lineup meant that PBKS were always in front.
ČSK pitchers struggled to respond despite timely help from the surface. Failure to contain runs or create pressure allowed PBKS to cruise to the target in just 18.4 overs, extending CSK’s unsettling run at home and underlining Punjab’s growing batting firepower.
