The M Chinnaswamy Stadium has long been the pressure cooker of the IPL and Chennai Super Kings are firmly in the firing line on Sunday night. For more than a decade, the yellow army marched into Bengaluru with the smug swagger of a lease-owning team. However, the 2026 season brought a rather brutal eviction notice.
We head into this southern derby on the back of two crushing defeats, CSK are not only looking for points, but also for pulse. A 0–3 record in their last three games against the defending champions only adds to the unease, as does a bowling unit that is currently leaking more than a cheap tap in the monsoon.
The lion’s den seems to have moved north. RCB are favourites, yes. But more than that, they have an opportunity to turn a crisis into a full-blown early-season disaster for a Chennai side that looks less like a dynasty and more like a bunch of lost tourists. without their GPS in the shape of MS Dhoni.

After years of playing second fiddle to this rivalry, RCB will be licking their lips on Sunday.
TV GUIDE AND LIVE
Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Chennai Super Kings will start at 19:30 IST on Sunday 5th April. Live streaming will be available on JioHotstar, with TV coverage on Star Sports Network.
RCB vs CSK: HEAD-TO-HEAD
Few rivalries in the IPL carry such emotional weight. Historically, Chennai Super Kings have held the upper hand in this fixture, consistently outplaying RCB across phases and conditions.
In RCB’s 36 matches, they managed only 13 wins and 22 losses against the Super Kings. Even at their home venue, the margin is tighter, with RCB winning six and losing five. RCB do double over CSK in IPL 2025. (Photo Reuters)
However, recent meetings indicate a shift. Bengaluru have claimed the last three meetings between the sides, suggesting a changing dynamic and a growing belief in their ranks that the long-term balance of power may be tipping.
TALKING POINTS: CSK UNDER PRESSURE
Chennai Super Kings are a side lacking in both personnel and confidence. In the absence of Dewald Brevis, who is out, and MS Dhoni, the Super Kings relied heavily on their top order for runs. After managing just 121 against Rajasthan Royals in the season opener, CSK showed improved batting against Punjab Kings as they put 209 on the board – but it proved to be insufficient.

Acquired in that sensational trade when Ravindra Jadeja moved to Rajasthan Royals, Samson is yet to find his Pink City rhythm in yellow. Captain Ruturaj also seemed hesitant and CSK’s inexperienced middle order felt the pressure.
The bowling has also wilted and is showing signs of panic at the start of the season.
The Chennai Super Kings bowling group enters Chinnaswamy under immense psychological and tactical pressure.
The unit, which failed to defend 210 in its previous outing, looks devoid of its traditional discipline, especially in the absence of MS Dhoni’s tactical micromanagement. Matt Henry and Khaleel Ahmed have struggled for consistency and there is no room for error against an RCB side that has beaten them in their last three encounters.
Noor Ahmed has not been able to provide the attacking threat he once did, especially without a spin-bowling partner to offer control (read: without Ravindra Jadeja’s relentless accuracy from the other end).
BALANCED RCB SIDE
For years, RCB’s identity has been defined by explosive batting masking the fragility of bowling. Since last season, this story has started to develop.
Their opening win showcased a bowling unit that performed with discipline and variety. The pace attack, even in the absence of Josh Hazlewood, looked threatening. They found a new hero in Jacob Duffywhose variations provided the blueprint for success in their clinical opening win over SRH. The tall New Zealand fast bowler mirrored Hazlewood’s lengths, dismantling the SunRisers batting group last saturday
He was supported by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and young medium pacer Abhinandan Singh, who took a wicket on debut.
The spin combination of Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma provided the key stability in the middle overs. However, they ran out of runs last Saturday and failed to complete their full quota of four overs each. Jacob Duffy could have written the problem in bold for CSK. (Photo: PTI)
CSK will soon have to put pressure on RCB’s bowling unit, which showed signs of vulnerability against SunRisers Hyderabad. Their fifth bowler, Romario Shepherd, has been moved to the bleachers – an area of concern that the Super Kings can exploit.
BATTERS GROUP GROUP
If anything, the RCB batting unit looks daunting.
At the top, Virat Kohli continues to set the tone with calculated authority, while Devdutt Padikkal’s fluidity has brought the early momentum. The result is a batting unit that no longer feels overly dependent on individual brilliance, instead operating as a consistent collective threat.
The sheer brutality of RCB’s batting in their season opener against SunRisers Hyderabad sent shockwaves through the league’s bowling fraternity. The defending champions scored an impressive 202 to complete the fastest 200-plus chase in IPL history, reaching the target in a staggering 15.4 overs. This sustained attack was led by Virat Kohli, whose unbeaten 69 off 38 balls anchored the chase.
However, it was a mammoth 61 off 26 deliveries by Devdutt Padikkal— highlighted by a ruthless halt to SRH’s pace attack — that defined the innings. With skipper Rajat Patidar adding a 12-ball 31 to sustain the frenetic scoring, RCB’s top order seems to be operating at such a level of collective efficiency that any target looks short.
With the likes of Romario Shepherd and Tim David waiting in the wings, RCB will be enjoying the conditions at home more than ever.
TEAM NEWS: RCB vs CSK
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are unlikely to tinker with a winning combination even when they return after a week’s break.
On the other hand, CSK needs consistency in team selection. They have to support their young Rs 14.2 crore signings, Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer, even though the IPL has seemed too big for them so far.
After selecting Veer in CSK’s XI against Punjab, he did not use the left-arm spinner at all.
With CSK fielding only two overseas players against Punjab, they might consider someone like Akeal Hosein, a left-arm spinner from the Caribbean, to add bite to the powerplay.
But can they afford to play three spinners at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium?
RCB PREDICTED XI: Virat Kohli, Phil Salt, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (capt), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Tim David, Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Abinandan Singh, Jacob Duffy.
Impact Sub: Suyash Sharma.
CSK PREDICTED XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad (captain), Sanju Samson, Ayush Mhatre, Sarfaraz Khan, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Prashant Veer, Matt Henry, Noor Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed.
Impact Sub: Akeal Hosein.
RCB VS CSK: HOW WILL THE FIELD PLAY?
Chinnaswamy’s pitch remains a strike-maker’s dream. While spinners may find a hint of grip in the first 10 overs, the true nature of the surface ensures that any score below 200 is effectively a loss.
Winning the toss and bowling first remains the clear choice.
There is no threat of rain. Expect a pleasant evening in Bengaluru.
