Rajasthan Royals have named Sri Lanka T20I captain Dasun Shanak as a replacement for the injured Sam Curran ahead of IPL 2026, filling a crucial void in their squad. Curran, who joined the franchise in a high-profile trade, was ruled out for the season with a groin injury.
Shanaka, who went unsold in the IPL mini-auction, it was initially set up as part of the PSL with the Lahore Qalandars. However, the opportunity to join the IPL prompted the switch, with the Sri Lankan all-rounder now expected to join the Royals soon, subject to completing formalities with the PSL. Rajasthan Royals have confirmed that Shanaka has been signed for 2 million rupees as Curran’s replacement. The all-rounder has previously featured in the IPL for Gujarat Titans.

The move gives Rajasthan a ‘like-for-like’ option, given that Shanaka can contribute as a middle-order batsman as well as a bowling all-rounder. His recent international form also adds value as he led Sri Lanka to the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup, scoring 165 runs and taking three wickets. Overall, Shanaka brings significant experience, having represented Sri Lanka in 6 Tests, 71 ODIs and 131 T20Is, with over 3350 international runs and 86 wickets.
PSL CONTINUES TO LOSE PLAYERS IN IPL
Shanaka’s move once again highlights the growing trend of players choosing IPL opportunities over commitments in other leagues. The financial strength and global visibility of the IPL continues to make it the most attractive T20 competition in the world.
The trend has raised concerns in Pakistan cricket, with former pacer Shoaib Akhtar warning that repeated mid-season exits could weaken the overall quality of the PSL. Shanak’s move follows similarly a case involving Zimbabwean pacer Blessing Muzarabani who joined the Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement earlier.
Such developments underscore the widening gap between the leagues when it comes to retaining top foreign talent.
HOW DOES SHANAKA FIT INTO THE RR SETUP
For Rajasthan Royals, Shanak’s arrival comes as a timely boost. With Curran out, the team needed an experienced all-rounder capable of balancing the side.
Shanak’s batting power in the middle order and ability to chip with the ball make him a versatile option. His management experience in Sri Lanka also adds another dimension to the team as RR look to build momentum in IPL 2026.
While Curran’s absence is a significant setback, Shanaka’s inclusion ensures the Royals maintain balance and depth heading into the new season.
