The decision proved effective as India won a record third Men’s T20 World Cup title at the Narendra Modi Stadium earlier this month, with Samson emerging as the player of the tournament.

IPL 2026 should be an audition for India’s next T20I captain Speaking to the media before the season, Gill emphasized that his performances over the past few years speak for themselves and that he doesn’t feel the need to prove anything.“Not at all. I think if you look at the last three or four seasons, I’ve got the most runs in the IPL. So I don’t think I have anything to prove, especially this season. In the four years I’ve played for this team, I think we’ve done pretty well as a team and I think I’ve done pretty well as a batsman.”“So I don’t think I have to prove my worth to anybody. I think I have to do what I’ve been doing the last four years. We have to be consistent as a team, which I think we’ve been. If we continue to do that, sooner or later, I think we’ll win that trophy again,” Gill said at Thursday’s preseason press conference. The 26-year-old reiterated that personal achievements are not a driving factor for him, whether he is representing his franchise or the national team.“Honestly, I am not one to be too concerned with personal goals, whichever team I am playing for, be it my country or Gujarat.“The team I play for – I like them to win and that’s where my personal goal starts and ends. So I think for me the goal doesn’t change – to make my team win as many games as possible. Obviously as a team, if you’re playing in the IPL, you’re playing to win them.”“If you’re playing a series, you want to beat other teams in the series, so those are the goals I’m looking forward to and I don’t really have my own personal goals. Like now, obviously you’re going to win the IPL. Once that’s over, of course we’ll have some other tournaments in the team. So my personal goals would change to that, and that’s how I’d like to look at my goals.”Gill has been in exceptional form in recent seasons of the IPL. In 2023, when Gujarat Titans reached the final, he won the Orange Cap with 890 runs at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80. He followed this up with 426 runs in 2024 at an average of 38.73 and a strike rate of 147.40 before scoring 650 runs in 2025 at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.88.With consistent performances behind him and leadership responsibilities on his shoulders, Gill enters IPL 2026 firmly focused on team success over individual accolades.
