IPL 2026 Eliminator: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s pressure test in playoffs meets familiar SRH

The IPL playoffs arrived for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi almost as quickly as international fame. At just 15, the Rajasthan Royals teenage sensation now enters his first IPL knockout match carrying not only RR’s batting hopes but the curiosity of the entire tournament which has slowly fallen in love with his fearlessness.

In the way of Rajasthan in New Chandigarh on Wednesday will be a Sunrisers Hyderabad side that knows exactly how dangerous the teenager can be and also knows exactly how to survive an Eliminator trip. After all, SRH remain the only team since 2016 to win the IPL after appearing in the Eliminator and they would like to believe that “2026 is the new 2016” is more than a joke.

Betting is now brutally simple. Win and move into Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans. Lose and go home.

While Vaibhav became the face of RR’s late season surgeSunrisers Hyderabad will quietly arrive with a serious psychological edge. They have already beaten Rajasthan twice this season and are currently on a six-match winning streak against them that dates back to 2022.

In the first meeting, SRH dismantled RR by 57 runs in Hyderabad Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain combined for eight wickets. The second clash in Jaipur looked different just because of that Vaibhav exploded in a stunning 36-ball century, but even that eventually ended in another win for SRH.

RR only sealed their place in the play-offs in the last weekend after back-to-back wins over struggling opponents and recovered from a phase where even stand-in captain Riyan Parag admitted the side did not deserve a top-four spot if they continued to play the way they had been. SRH, meanwhile, missed out on the top two, partly because of that shocking 86 all out against Gujarat Titans, a collapse that ultimately damaged their net speed beyond repair.

Which means both teams arrive with unfinished business.

One side wants to prove that the teenage phenom can survive the pressure of the playoffs. The other wants to remind everyone why his batting line-up remains the most fearsome in the tournament.

VAIBHAV SOORYAVANSHI VS. SRH’S HIT SQUAD

At the age of 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already produced one of the wildest debut seasons the IPL has ever seen.

The left-hander from Bihar smashed 583 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 232.27, turning almost every power play into a controlled frenzy. His 93 off 38 balls against Lucknow Super Giants remains one of the standout knocks of IPL 2026, while his 36-ball century against SRH officially made him the breakout superstar of the tournament.

But the playoffs are a whole different animal.

Every weakness is harder to investigate. Every risky shot suddenly carries with it other consequences. And SRH probably have the precise bowling attack needed to test whether Vaibhav’s fearless approach can survive the knock-out pressure.

Pat Cummins barely got a jump on Vaibhav during that Jaipur century, sending down just four deliveries that disappeared for eight runs. It would be surprising if it happened again. SRH are expected to attack him much earlier this time with Cummins’ hard lengths, Sakib Hussain’s variations and potentially returning Harshal Patel as an Impact option.

Vaibhav spent the entire season causing panic among the bowlers.

Now comes the bigger challenge: handling an attack that already knows exactly how dangerous it can be.

THE SRH BURNING LOOKS EVEN SCARY

For all the hype surrounding Vaibhav, SRH have an increasingly complete batting line-up heading into the knockout clash.

Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen remain one of the most devastating top-four combinations in the tournament, although inconsistency has hurt them at times this season. Their biggest problem was rarely the ceiling; it was a collapse. Abhishek, Head, Klaasen have been in form for SRH this season. (Photo by Reuters)

That brutal 86 against Gujarat Titans eventually turned into a slim run net difference that cost them the top two spots. But when this batting unit clicks, very few bowling attacks survive.

Rajasthan’s bowling will also bring injury concerns into the Eliminator. Riyan Parag and Ravindra Jadeja are both nursing babies though the camp is still hopeful that they will turn up. Ravi Bishnoi could come in if Jadeja misses out, while RR also have Sandeep Sharma available as a seam option.

Apart from Vaibhav, RR’s batting has depended heavily on Dhruv Jurel, who has been quietly enjoying his best IPL season with 458 runs at a strike rate close to 150. But SRH can specifically target him with left-arm spinner Shivang Kumar, one of their breakout performers this year.

Jurel’s strike-to-pace ratio this season is 161.45. Against the spin it drops significantly to 129.82.

JOFRA ARCHER VS TRAVISHEK

This could easily decide the Eliminator in the powerplay itself.

Jofra Archer’s spell against Mumbai Indians was arguably the moment Rajasthan Royals officially booked their place in the playoffs. The England quick has been sensational in RR’s wins this season, picking up eight wickets at an average of 17.12 and an economy of 8.05. In defeats, these numbers drop sharply. Now comes the bigger test: Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma.

There is already history there too. Archer dismissed Head three times in T20 cricket and also removed Abhishek once off the first ball earlier this season. But despite being dismissed against him, both SRH openers continue to score in innings above 160.

Head’s last three innings were 0, 6 and 26 and RR will be hoping that Archer’s hard lengths and surprising buffer will continue to keep the Aussie at bay.

But if Head and Abhishek survive that opening burst, Mullanpur could quickly turn into another six-hitting exhibition.

SRH VS RR: Pitch conditions and weather

The conditions in New Chandigarh may quietly become the biggest factor in the game.

Temperatures in northern India remained brutally hot even late into the evening, while Pitch 4 at Mullanpur is expected to be used again. Earlier this season, SRH posted 219 on the same surface against Punjab Kings, only to watch PBKS chase it down comfortably.

That tells its own story.

This remains where the scoring explodes early before slowing down significantly after the power play. The average first innings total this season is around 214, while Punjab even crossed 250 here against Lucknow.

Interestingly though, spin has enjoyed slightly better control than pace at the venue this year, with spinners operating at an economy of 9.29 compared to pacers who go above 11.

This could bring Harshal Patel back into the conversation for SRH despite Praful Hinge’s recent success. Harshal’s numbers against RR are outstanding: 23 wickets at an average of 16.3 overall, including 11 wickets in Mullanpur alone.

He has also dismissed Riyan Parag three times already.

SRH VS RR: TEAM NEWS AND INJURIES

Sunrisers Hyderabad:

No major injury concerns in the SRH camp heading into the Eliminator. The only major selection debate could revolve around whether Harshal Patel returns as an Impact Player ahead of Praful Hinge.

Rajasthan Royals:

Riyan Parag and Ravindra Jadeja carry niggles. RR remain hopeful that both will be available, although Jadeja’s participation may depend on a late fitness assessment. Ravi Bishnoi and Sandeep Sharma remain backup options.
