Chennai Super Kings batsman Dewald Brevis has heaped praise on young teammate Ayush Mhatre, calling him “special” amid his breakthrough performances in the ongoing IPL season. Brevis credited the spark in the dressing room as a key factor behind CSK’s recent turnaround after a slow start.
After losing the first three games CSK bounced back with two consecutive winsfueled in part by Mhatra’s explosive scoring in a knock of 171. Mhatra’s emergence has injected fresh energy into CSK’s batting, with the youngster already amassing 171 runs, including two half-centuries, which have helped push the pace in their campaign.
“He’s just special. He’s young, he’s playing the way he is,” Brevis said. “There’s a beautiful spark in the team and yes, it’s definitely all of us – all the management and everyone.”
The South African batsman believes that if Mhatre continues to nurture his skills, he can shape his game as he wants. “That’s my advice to him: keep being true to yourself. Have fun and play like that no matter what happens. You have ups and downs in your career and it’s great to see him play. He basically takes it ball by ball and just reacts. He hits the ball where he needs to go,” he added.
BREVIS RETURNS TO INCREASE CSK MEMBERSHIP
Brevis himself did added depth to CSK’s batting line-up after returning from injury. The South African youngster was sidelined ahead of the tournament with a side strain but is now regaining his rhythm and confidence.
“I feel absolutely great when I have a jump on the court, a good swing and feel for the game. I wanted a bit of confidence because it wasn’t nice to be out there with side tension. I’m glad I got a run,” he said.
After missing an opportunity to bat against Delhi Capitals, Brevis impressed with a quick 41 off 29 balls. against the Kolkata Knight Riders, contributing to a 32-run win. His return combined with Mhatre’s form has strengthened CSK’s batting unit, which is looking to build momentum in the tournament.
CSK will face another resurgent team Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on April 18.
