Mumbai Indians entered IPL 2026 by exorcising the ghost that had haunted them for thirteen years. Not since 2012 have they tasted victory in the opening of the season, but last Sunday clinical chase of 221 against Kolkata Knight Riders he did more than break the jinx; it served as a dire warning to the rest of the league. With a batting unit that acts as a non-stop attack and a bowling line-up capable of inciting envy, the five-time champions arrive in the capital as a fearsomely complete outfit.
Yet standing in their way this Saturday are the Delhi Capitals, a side whose promise on paper is finally beginning to translate into intent on the pitch. Under heavy, potentially rain-laden skies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the first double-header of the season promises to be a high-octane clash on a surface tailor-made for hitters.
Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians will start at 15:30 IST, which will be the highlight of the first day of the IPL 2026 double-header. JioHotstar will provide the live streaming of the match, while Star Sports will offer the telecast on Saturday, April 4.
HEAD TO HEAD
Historically, this facility has tilted towards Mumbai. In 37 encounters, the five-time champions asserted their authority with 21 wins to Delhi’s 16. On the banks of the Yamuna, however, the story shifts. At the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Capitals have a slim advantage, having won seven of the 13 matches played at the venue.
However, in their previous meeting here, Karun Nair’s brilliant 89 went in vain as Mumbai defended 205 to win by 12 runs – a result that ignited a six-game winning streak that eventually took them into the playoffs.
BIG INCREASE FOR ME
Mitchell Santner likely to replace Allah Ghazanfar in XI MI (PTI Photo)
The biggest team news comes from the Mumbai camp. After Afghan youngster Allah Ghazanfar underwent his baptism of fire – scoring 51 on debut not out, the visitors were bolstered by the arrival of New Zealand’s T20I captainMitchell Santner. At the nets on Friday, Santner looked impressively sharp and hit the ball with a crispness that suggested he was ready to provide the balance that Mumbai lacked in their passing.
Mumbai’s new-ball trio of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult remains the most feared gloveman in the league. Their combined pedigree is likely to keep Deepak Chahar on the sidelines, with Shardul Thakur preferred for his ability to break partnerships through the middle roles.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court is facing strict scrutiny, especially after their collapse in Lucknowwhere they slipped to 26/4 chasing 142 before Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs engineered a recovery.
Despite this volatility, management seems intent on supporting its core. KL Rahul cut a certain figure in practice on Friday and his timing returned as he dismantled the net bowlers with typical elegance. After falling in love with Mohammed Shami’s first ball in Lucknow, Rahul will be looking to reset early and make his mark.
Pathum Nissanka looked equally composed beside him; Given the friendly dimensions of the Kotla and the true nature of the surface, the Sri Lankan is perfectly poised to take advantage of the conditions and post significant scores, provided he can handle the initial dose of Mumbai’s world-class attack.
TACTICAL CHESS: DC vs MI
Can Rohit Sharma beat the menace of Axar Patel? (PTI photo)
The power play presents an impressive subplot. Fresh off a match-winning fifty, Rohit Sharma was a study in control on Friday, favoring timing over brute force. Still, he faces a familiar challenge in Axar Patel. The Delhi captain has dismissed Rohit thrice in this format and is expected to play the power game again.
However, if Delhi allow Rohit and Ryan Rickelton any latitude in the power-play, the consequences could be dire. In their opening match against KKR, the pair reduced the chase to 221 runs for the parade with an impressive stand of 148 runs. With Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma waiting in the wings, any failure to strike early would see the game slip away at an alarming rate.
Mitchell Starc’s absence, still sidelined by shoulder and elbow concerns, leaves a sizable void in Delhi’s power-play plans. Without the left-hander’s ability to spin the ball into the right-handers, Mukesh Kumar and Lungi Ngidi have to shoulder the responsibility.
Buoyed by his brilliant dismissal of Nicholas Pooran in Lucknow, Ngidi will carry confidence into this contest.
However, Delhi’s trump card remains their rotating trio. Kuldeep Yadav, fresh off a winning spell, spoke with the quiet assurance of a bowler at the peak of his craft. In a format increasingly dominated by the bat, Kuldeep continues his attacking wrist spin.
“It is very important for spinners to stick to their strength,” Kuldeep said.
“When the bats put you under pressure, you tend to lose power. You look for safer options to get out of that situation. But I believe it’s important to focus on my power.”
“You also have to understand what the batsmen’s strengths are… If you’re an attacking spinner, don’t try to change that. That’s your identity.”
TEAM NEWS: MINIMAL CUTTING IS EXPECTED
Mumbai are likely to make one change, with Santner replacing Ghazanfar.
Meanwhile, Delhi are expected to retain their winning XI, although a tactical switch between Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma as Impact Player remains a possibility depending on match conditions.
Major Cities of Delhi: KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Nitish Rana, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Axar Patel (capt), Vipraj Nigam, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, T Natarajan, Lungi Ngidi.
Impact Sub: Sameer Rizvi / Ashutosh Sharma
Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Tilak Verma, Hardik Pandya (capt), Naman Dhir, Sherfane Rutherford, Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Mayank Markande, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah.
Impact Sub: Suryakumar Yadav
PITCH AND WEATHER: MAJOR’S DELIGHT?
The Arun Jaitley Stadium continues its evolution into a batting haven. With compact boundaries and a surface that rewards clean timing, a high-scoring contest looks the most likely scenario for this afternoon’s match.
Weather watch: The forecast points to a humid afternoon with temperatures around 33°C. However, there is a 30 per cent chance of showers which could bring early moisture to the pitch, perhaps tempting the skipper to win the toss to bowl first and use any help under the cloud cover.
