In a city that treats its cricketing icons like royalty, Tuesday night belonged to a man whose strength and loyalty have become legendary. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) officially retired the number 12 jersey in honor of Andre Russell during Knights Unplugged, a high-energy pre-season event in Kolkata attended by the entire 2026 team and thousands of emotional fans.

The atmosphere was charged as KKR CEO Venky Mysore entered the dais holding a specially framed memento of the purple and gold kit.
“In your honour, we would like to retire this number for KKR,” announced Mysore, a statement that ensured no other Knights would ever wear the number that Russell had turned into a symbol of fear for bowlers the world over.
The ceremony served as a poignant end to a story that took a dramatic turn ahead of the final IPL auction. With speculation rife that “Dre Russ” would be headlining the auction table, Russell took matters into his own hands. He posted a personal video that he remembered with great emotion on Tuesday, he declared that his heart belonged only to Calcutta. He made it clear in that video: if he hadn’t played for KKR, he wouldn’t have played in the IPL at all.
True to his word, as Russell continues to showcase his Muscle in various global T20 leagues, he has moved on to a new chapter within the IPL. Instead of padding, he’ll now be hounded as the franchise’s Power Coach, a role designed to hone the finishing skills of the next generation.
I LEFT EVERYTHING ON THE FIELD
Russell was visibly moved as he watched a montage of his 10-year journey. His KKR story is one of sheer statistical dominance – 2,651 runs at a staggering 174.18, accompanied by 123 wickets. He was the catalyst for the title in 2014 and the veteran anchor during the emotional championship run in 2024.
“I got a little emotional watching that video,” Russell admitted to the cheering crowd.
“It’s been over ten years of amazing success, being part of two title-winning teams. To see what it’s meant to everyone… that’s another treat. World Cups are special. When you win the IPL, it’s something else. The last one we won, I had tears in my eyes.”
“When you leave everything on the field, you won’t regret leaving the game,” he said.
“Every game I played I played as if it was the last game of my IPL career.
As the 2026 season approaches, Russell isn’t looking back wistfully, but forward with purpose. He expressed immense excitement about joining a behind-the-scenes staff that he considers to be one of the best in the business. Former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar will be the head coach of KKR this season while Shane Watson has joined them as an assistant coach.
“I don’t regret being in this role. I’m excited,” Russell said.
“We have one of the youngest and very talented coaches. I would love to be part of a coaching staff like that. It makes my job easier. I hope whatever knowledge I bring to the table makes their job easier.”
While Andre Russell’s jersey was retired, KKR also made a progressive statement, appointing Rinka Singh as his vice-captain. Ajinkya Rahane will lead a team that will be looking to bounce back after finishing eighth last season.
KKR will begin their campaign against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, March 29.
