Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag prioritized his civic duty over cricketing commitments as he cast his vote in the Assam Assembly elections on Thursday, April 9. The Guwahati native cast his vote along with his parents, former first-class cricketer Parag Das and former national record-holder swimmer Mithoo Barooah, at the local polling station of Lal Singh Academy of New Kharughuli Guwahati.
Sharing the moment on social media, Riyan posted a photo with his parents captioned ‘doing our duty’. The gesture emphasized his role as a citizen over his sporting duties with Rajasthan Royals ahead of their clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Election officials reported a turnout of approx 84.42 percent by 5 pm in all 126 assembly seats in Assamwhich surpassed the 82.04 percent recorded in 2021. This strong turnout underscored voter engagement in the state’s political process.
Riyan is currently in Guwahati where the Barsapara Stadium serves as Rajasthan Royals’ secondary home ground this IPL season. Royals have secured wins in both their home matches so far, defeating Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. They also won the away match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, moving them to the top of the points table after an emphatic win over Mumbai Indians.
THE CAPTAIN OF PARAGS PRAISED
Riyan’s captaincy attracted widespread acclaim after the team’s strong start to the season. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri praised the temperament of the young leader after the win against Gujarat Titans, he described it as “simply one of the best games in IPL history” and urged that it be archived. Shastri highlighted Riyan’s poise and potential in leading roles.

“I think when I start talking about the journey, it’s going to be a long answer. But like I said before, it’s a lot of things that go outside of my game, a lot of opinions about me off the field, which is something I’ve learned not to let it affect me. I think I do that pretty well and the same thing happened this year.” This approach helped him stay focused during the review.
