Sai Sudharsan (Image credit: GT/IPL) The game of T20 has evolved rapidly. With prominent openers like Abhishek Sharma, young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Priyansh Arya and others impressing, the format has taken a more aggressive turn. Batsmen now often come with one clear intention – to hit the ball out of the park. However, for Sai Sudharsan, versatility remains more important than chasing a high strike rate heading into IPL 2026.“I think it’s important to have that versatility. It’s important to look at it that way, rather than just looking at wanting to improve my strikeout rate. Rather than that, I think I’m trying to be more versatile.”

IPL 2026: Mukesh Kumar on Shami’s impact and India’s comeback plans “I think it depends a lot on the conditions. So much depends on a lot of variables. Yes, they (Abhishek, Sanju Samson, Sooryavanshi) have done a great job. And as batsmen, we would love each other and most of all I would love to learn from it. And I would definitely like to raise the bar as well.”“If the wicket is really good, yes, we’ll have to do that as well (as far as the strike rate). But if the wicket is tacky, if the wicket is a bit difficult, we’ll have to be versatile enough to accommodate that as well. I think I’m much more focused on being versatile and taking longer innings and getting the team to win.”Sudharsan won the ‘Orange Cap’ with 759 runs at a strike rate of around 145 in the last IPL season.“Gill is a trustworthy person”Having opened the batting with Shubman Gill for several years now, Sudharsan has developed a strong mutual trust with the Gujarat Titans skipper and feels comfortable discussing his thoughts and state of mind with him.“Shubman as a captain is a very trustworthy person. He makes you feel that you belong to the team. He keeps you in a very good place.

Do you think versatility is more important than a high strike rate in T20 cricket?
“He’s very instinctive. He knows what you’re feeling. Mostly when I felt something in my mind, he’d tell me, ‘I understand what you’re feeling, but you’re there.’“Sometimes he would say something to make me feel a bit more positive or to make me feel a bit more grounded. I think he’s one of the great captains I’ve played under,” Sudharsan said, leaving no doubt about Gill’s leadership.
