England’s vice-captain Harry Brook has made the surprising decision to withdraw from the entire IPL 2025 season, just days before the tournament’s commencement. This unexpected move has left fans and pundits alike in shock. Former England captain Nasser Hussain weighed in on the matter, offering his speculation on the possible reasons behind Brook’s withdrawal.
Hussain believes that Brook already has a packed schedule as one of England’s few all-format cricketers. With Jos Buttler stepping down as captain, Brook is also being considered as a potential candidate for England’s white-ball captaincy. This added responsibility could be a factor in his decision to step back from the IPL.
Over the past few years, Brook has risen to prominence, establishing himself as a key figure in England’s batting lineup across all formats. However, his sudden withdrawal from the IPL has left fans stunned and questioning the reasons behind it.

Nasser Hussain reveals why Harry Brook pulled out
While speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain speculated that Brook’s decision might be linked to his heavy workload and potential discussions with England’s managing director, Rob Key, regarding the captaincy. “I think it could be a sign. Rob Key may have spoken to him and said, ‘You’ve a lot on your plate. We may want you to captain’. Who knows? He has got a lot on his plate coming up with a massive nine months within India, Test series at home, and then the Ashes away,” Hussain said.
The former England skipper also noted that Brook’s absence in the previous IPL due to personal family reasons might have influenced his decision. “He may just think that right, I’m going to concentrate on Test match cricket,” Hussain added.
England is set to play a five-match Test series against India at home starting June 2025, followed by an away Ashes series in Australia. Brook is expected to play a pivotal role in both series.
Nasser Hussain expects Harry Brook to return to form
Hussain further suggested that Brook and Rob Key might have already discussed the player’s workload management. He expressed optimism that Brook would regain his form after taking a break from the IPL.
“I would be surprised if Rob Key hasn’t had a conversation with him yet and asked what do you think about your workload in the year ahead. That may have been the conversation. Only Rob Key and Harry Brook will know,” Hussain remarked.
“But he has taken a rest, and hopefully, he will get back into the rhythm, find some form, and be up and firing for two absolutely vital Test series ahead,” he added.
Harry Brook pulls out of IPL 2025
This marks the second consecutive season that Brook has withdrawn from the IPL. He was set to represent Delhi Capitals this season after being acquired for INR 6.25 crore by the franchise. The ECB conveyed Brook’s decision to the BCCI last week, who then informed Delhi Capitals.
There is speculation that Brook could face a two-year ban from the IPL under new regulations, though the league has yet to make an official announcement. Brook clarified on social media that he needs time to recharge after a grueling schedule.
