Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill believes that a team scoring 300 runs in the IPL is an achievable milestone in the near future. With the IPL 2025 season set to kick off on March 22, Gill feels this feat could become a reality this year, especially given the high-scoring matches witnessed in the previous season.
The IPL 2024 season saw several record-breaking totals, with nine out of the ten highest team scores in the tournament’s history coming from that year alone. Teams surpassed the 250-run mark nine times, and there were multiple instances of totals in the 240s as well.
One of the most explosive matches of IPL 2024 saw Punjab Kings successfully chase down a target of 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders with eight balls to spare, highlighting the evolution of batting firepower in T20 cricket. A major factor contributing to these high totals is the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to strengthen their batting or bowling based on the match situation.
Shubman Gill Predicts 300-Run Milestone in IPL 2025
Gill believes the Impact Player rule has added an extra layer of excitement to the IPL and has played a significant role in the rapid evolution of the game. He stated, “The pace of the game has reached a point where it feels like we could score 300 in a match. Last year, we came very close on a few occasions. The Impact Player rule adds excitement and makes the IPL even more entertaining.”
Beyond the big totals, Gill also emphasized how the IPL continues to unearth new talent. Every season, young and underrated players make their mark, delivering standout performances that propel them into the limelight.
Shubman Gill on the Challenges of Injuries
The GT captain acknowledged that the tournament’s demanding schedule, with frequent matches and travel, keeps players engaged. However, he also highlighted the challenges teams face, particularly injuries. He said, “If you’re winning, the momentum carries you forward, with three, four, or even five consecutive victories. However, injuries can make things difficult. When one or two key players are injured, finding suitable replacements becomes a challenge.”
Despite these hurdles, Gill believes the IPL remains the most thrilling cricketing event, offering fresh surprises for players and fans every season.
Shubman Gill on Leadership and Growth
Gill also reflected on his leadership journey, describing it as a process of continuous learning and adaptation. He shared, “As a leader, the key is to understand what enables each player to perform at their best. Every player is different, and leadership is about managing them effectively. Knowing their strengths, weaknesses, and how to bring them back into form when they are struggling is crucial.”
He added that leadership has encouraged him to communicate more with his teammates, something he didn’t do as often before. He now makes a conscious effort to connect with players, understand their mindset, and boost their confidence, fostering a strong team environment.
Gill concluded, “The more you play, the more experience you gain through highs and lows, and that shapes you as a leader. It is essential to have one-on-one conversations with teammates. When a team leader reaches out, it instills confidence in the players and helps build a strong team environment.”
