Internet services were restored in Assam’s Kokrajhar and Chirang districts on Saturday (January 24, 2026), four days after being shut down following violent clashes that left two dead.
The riots erupted on January 21 after a road accident allegedly led to the death of a Bodo youth. The incident sparked mob violence that resulted in further deaths and widespread disruption. Authorities have suspended internet access as a precaution to prevent the spread of rumors and maintain law and order.
The interior ministry reviewed the situation before the restrictions were lifted, with officials saying the decision was taken after careful assessment as the security situation gradually stabilized.
Heavy security presence remains in place ahead of Republic Day. Assam Police, Rapid Response Force and Central Reserve Police Force personnel are patrolling the sensitive areas to prevent further incidents.
A senior police officer said authorities are keeping a close watch. “The situation is under control and we call on citizens to maintain mutual harmony and cooperate with the security forces,” she said.
Authorities have stressed that vigilance will remain high even as schools, offices and markets have resumed operations and normal life is slowly returning.
