Three weeks after suffering an electoral defeat in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress continues to struggle on multiple fronts, including internal bickering, resignations and growing public anger against the party’s grassroots functionaries.

On Thursday (May 28, 2026), differences between two senior party MPs, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Kalyan Banerjee, came to light when Dr. Ghosh Dastidar has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla asking for action against a colleague from the MP.

The MP alleged that Mr Banerjee verbally abused her in Parliament. The Trinamool Congress Chief Whip in the Lok Sabha held a press conference where he questioned the timing of her complaint and stressed that if any such incident took place in the Parliament, it should have been reported to the Speaker immediately and not with delay.

Just as the two senior MPs were embroiled in a spat of words, senior Trinamool Congress MP Sougata Roy faced protests outside a police station in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday (May 28).

The 78-year-old Dum Dum MP visited the Nimta police station to present a delegation alleging attacks on his party councilors in several areas of Nimta and North Dum Dum. As he came out of the police station, a crowd gathered and shouted the slogans “Chor Chor (thief thief).” Eggs were also thrown at the MP’s vehicle.Mr Roy said BJP workers were behind the mischief.

Meanwhile, in another development, the West Bengal Police has seized over ₹2.24 crore stashed in a jute field at Baduria in North 24 Parganas allegedly by Baduria Municipal Chairman Dipankar Bhattacharya, who was arrested a few days ago.

In several parts of the state, including Barrackpore, a local with criminal antecedents was paraded by the police and taunted by the public. Over the past few weeks, several local Trinamool Congress leaders have not only faced arrest but have also been attacked by locals who have accused them of corruption and extortion.

In a series of resignations, former Rajya Sabha MP and Trinamool Congress leader Santanu Sen resigned as the party’s national spokesperson, criticizing the party for developments surrounding the RG Kar rape and murder case, terming the poll defeat as a public rejection of “unethical practices”.

Amidst these developments, Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee shared a cryptic poem titled “Chameleon” on social media. Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh urged party leaders not to discuss the party’s shortcomings in public.

“In this difficult time for the party and Bengal, the turnaround of Trinamool under Mamata di (Mrs Banerjee) is essential. I believe many workers are ready. People are there too. But leaders – some are invisible; some are revolutionaries; only some are visible. This cannot be. Let the efforts to solve the problems come from within the party,” Mr Ghosh said.
