The ejection of the waste along the foothills of Marudhalamalai continues to represent the threat to elephants because it serves as a key transit path that allows the Pachyderms to move between the Boluvičamatti valley and the Thadagam valley, according to nature enthusiasts.
They demanded the foot to be declared a “non -dumping zone” and restrict construction activities along the forest borders to protect this key intersection between two prominent valleys that form the key elephant habitats.
They repeated the demand for a recent elephant video, which was found on Saturday for Bharathiar University Campus, after they had been ejected on Morudhalai hills. Feeding with waste wrapped from plastic bags and accidental ingestion of sharp objects, such as broken glass pieces, elephants could pose serious health risks, one of them said.
The Hinde officer of the Ministry of Forest Department confirmed that the elephant he saw in the video is the one who was found by the sick.
“Elephants have a strong olfactory sense, which makes it easy to attract food ejected around the forest borders. These food waste is often covered with plastic bags that consume it.
The Somayampalayam Panchayat unloading yard in Marudhamalai Foothills is the largest waste landfill that adjacent to the road by elephant transit. Although activists require the authorities to close the landfill for several years, the deposition of waste continued on Sunday.
P. Shanmugasundaram of Coimbatore Wildlife Conservation Trust, a non -governmental organization that primarily works in the Marudhalamalai area, said the landfill should be closed first without waiting for Panchayat to merge with the city company Coimbatore City Corporation.
District Forest Officer N. Jayaraj said that the forest department raises concerns about landfill and the authorities launched efforts to dispose of waste from the area to another courtyard in the city.
