The stakeholders of the tourism and the civic representatives urged the state government to reopen the long -extinct TTDC hotel in Tharangambadi, emphasizing the lack of available accommodation in the city, which discourages passengers from stay overnight.
The Tharangambadi, the once prosperous Danish business base, remains an important destination for heritage hiking – known for its colonial architecture, historical churches and the ancient temple of Masilamaninathar – and continues to attract domestic and international visitors every day.
Hotel TTDC, built in 2000 and inaugurated by the former main minister M. Karunanidhi, operated under the Ministry of Tourism Tamil Nadu until it was closed in 2017, reportedly due to poor income performance. It was briefly rented to the private group of hospitality, which used it for limited events and parking before returning the property without maintenance.
Since then, the hotel has remained locked, although Tharangambadi has seen a permanent stream of tourists – especially on weekends. With only top private hotels, staying overnight in the city remains inaccessible to travelers with medium income and students.
“If this TTDC was restored, it would be the only affordable public accommodation in Tharangambadi, where only premium hotels are currently operating, which charge exaggerated rates,” said Pon. Rajendran, vice -chairman of Tharangambadi Panchayat. “Many tourists leave the same day due to high costs. The reopening of this device would support inclusive tourism,” Rajendran said.
The state government assigned CRORE 4.5 GBP to renovate the hotel in the 2024-25 tourism budget, which is to be carried out through Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation. But the work has not yet begun.
The official TTDC sources said that the renewal work will start soon and are expected to be completed within one year.
