Instagram is considering plans to launch standalone apps for its short form reel video content, a report said. With this alleged release, social media platforms are expected to introduce themselves in the field of short form video apps. It is largely dominated by Tiktok (Tiktok) – a party video hosting service that recently made headlines of its proposed ban, although the decision has been revoked for a limited period of time in the U.S.
Instagram’s Reel App Release
According to the information report, Instagram head Adam Mosseri introduced the company’s staff about the project’s potential reel app. It is said to be codenamed Ray Project and along with Instagram Reels, it may also show three-minute videos. Rumor has it that standalone apps offer a scrolling experience similar to the vertical of tiktok.
According to the report, Meta-owned social media platform aims to improve recommendations for new and existing users in the United States.
Although Instagram has not yet acknowledged the plans, the development comes at a time when Tiktok’s huge scrutiny of U.S. regulations that initially resulted in its ban in the U.S. Although the decision was later reversed, only a 75-day extension was granted for operation on U.S. soil, which ended on April 5.
Meanwhile, its parent company is said to be in conversation with the new Donald Trump Administration, which enables a U.S.-based company to earn a large share, allowing the app to maintain its availability in the country.
If the move comes true, this will be the second app launched by Instagram in 2025, which builds on the debut of the Edits App last month, which allows creators to edit videos with more creativity and precision than what currently offers on social media platforms. Currently limited to iOS, it is a mobile video editing solution that comes with a suite of creative tools such as enabling high-quality video capture, dedicated tabs for drafts and videos, and camera settings for resolution, frame rate and dynamic range.
