Inside Story: Why Rishabh Pant quit as LSG captain
Rishabh Pant’s captaincy of Lucknow Super Giants came to an abrupt end after a disastrous IPL 2026 campaign that saw the franchise finish at the bottom of the table.
on Thursday LSG confirmed that Pant had requested the release of his captaincy duties, with the franchise accepting his decision with immediate effect. While the announcement came after the season, Pant’s decision had been building for weeks as frustrations mounted during a campaign that fell short of expectations.
“Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wishes to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved as franchise captain and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect,” the franchise said in an official statement.
“Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we respectfully accepted,” said LSG director Tom Moody.
“These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for all that Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. We now focus on a collective rebuilding and restructuring to achieve the very best standards.”
GROWING DIFFERENCES BEHIND THE SCENES
The seeds of Pant’s decision were visible throughout the season.
Anyone who has followed LSG’s campaign closely would have noticed the subtle hints that emerged from the post-match press conferences. Pant has repeatedly spoken about the challenges of operating in an environment where multiple voices contribute to decision-making.
The leadership of the franchise included head coach Justin Langer, director Tom Moody, assistant coach Lance Klusener and senior players such as Kane Williamson. While such structures are common in franchise cricket, Pant found the arrangement increasingly uncomfortable.
As the season progressed, the difference became more and more apparent. At times, Pant indicated frustration with the amount of input coming from different quarters, while members of the think tank publicly questioned aspects of the team’s leadership and performance.
At one stage, Pant said that it is easy to come up with ideas but much more difficult to implement them on the field. The comment was widely interpreted as a reflection of different viewpoints within the setting.
DECISION BEFORE SEASON END
Contrary to popular perception, Pant did not make a decision after LSG finished last.
Already during the second half of the season, he informed the franchise that he wished to step down as captain. With a few games left in the campaign, Pant communicated his thoughts to the management and ownership group.
The franchise initially tried to convince him to change his mind. Given the difficult season, there was a feeling that an immediate decision would be premature. However, Pant remained firm in his stance.
As the season continued, he reiterated his desire to relinquish the role. Finally, after several rounds of discussions, the franchise accepted his request.
QUESTION OF AUTONOMY
One of the central issues was the difference in how Pant viewed the role of captain.
Pant has always been a captain who trusts his instincts. Throughout his career, he favored taking responsibility for decisions rather than relying heavily on instructions from the trenches.
During his time with the Delhi Capitals, he often backed his own judgment even when it differed from the suggestions coming from the support staff. Whether these decisions succeeded or failed, the captain was encouraged to own them.
At LSG, Pant increasingly felt that his room for maneuver was limited.
This disconnect emerged on numerous occasions throughout the season, particularly in high-pressure situations where opinions differed on tactical challenges.
DISAGREEMENTS ON KEY DECISIONS
One example that stood out came during Super Over against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Pant was not entirely convinced that Nicholas Pooran should be sent in to bat. His concern had little to do with head-to-head matches and more to do with form. Pooran has not been at his best at this stage of the tournament while Ayush Badoni has just played a quick and impressive innings.
Pant believed that Badoni’s pace and confidence made him a strong candidate for the situation. The management preferred a different approach and the final decision went in favor of Pooran.
The episode was not seen as a major confrontation, but highlighted the differing cricketing philosophies that existed in the camp.
There were also instances where Pant and the senior players held opposing views on tactical matters. Such disagreements are common in elite sport, but in a season where results have been hard to come by, any gap has been magnified.
HEAVY SEASON WEIGHT
The struggles were not limited to leadership.
Pant has had one of the toughest IPL seasons of his career with the bat. Runs were hard to come by and the pressure from the management of the struggling side only added to the burden.
The wicketkeeper-batsman also finds himself at a crossroads in international cricket. Pant, once a regular across all formats, is currently out of India’s white-ball plans and has also lost his Test vice-captain.
In this context, the captain felt more and more like another responsibility that he could do without.
The priority is now clear: rediscover his batting rhythm, score hard and force his way back into India’s limited-overs squads.
From Pant’s perspective, regaining his place in the national side is far more important than retaining the IPL captaincy.
REBUILDING STARTS IN LSG
Pant’s departure from the leadership role marks the beginning of a broader transition within the franchise.
Despite stepping down as captain, he is expected to remain with the team and fulfill the remainder of his contract. The franchise continues to see him as a key part of its plans going forward.
Attention will now turn to identifying the new captain. Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram have emerged as front-runners, with Marsh’s leadership experience making him a particularly strong candidate.
At the same time, LSG are set for another fundamental change. Justin Langer’s tenure as head coach is coming to an end, signaling a broader restructuring in the organization after a disappointing campaign.
For Lucknow Super Giants, IPL 2027 will be about rebuilding. For Pant, it will be about rediscovering the fearless batting that once made him one of India’s most valuable cricketers.
The captaincy chapter may have closed, but the bigger challenge now lies in reviving a career that is far from over.
