Injury scare for India: Shubman Gill retires injured in England ODIs

Shubman Gill left injured after suffering cramps India captain Shubman Gill was injured after suffering right leg cramps during India’s chase of 259 in the first ODI against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday.Gill was batting on 80 off 75 balls when he experienced discomfort in the 26th over of the innings. After facing a full charge from Josh Tongue that beat the outside edge, the Indian skipper took off his gloves, crouched on the pitch and grabbed the back of his right leg before deciding to walk off the field.The injury came just after Gill and Shreyas Iyer had added 100 runs to give India control of the chase. Washington Sundar came in as the substitute batsman.England bounced back immediately in the next over. Shreyas Iyer was run out after a mix of quick running and sharp fielding from Harry Brook.Washington Sundar edged a delivery from Jofra Archer to mid-off, prompting Iyer to go for a run. While running at the striker’s end, Iyer changed his path to avoid being hit by the ball, costing him valuable time. Brook collected the ball cleanly and hit it straight on the stumps, catching Iyer just short of his crease.Earlier, Joe Root and Liam Dawson rescued England with 121 runs for the seventh wicket to help the hosts post 258 in the first ODI.England were cruising at 61 for no loss before India triggered a collapse that left them on 107 for 6 in the 22nd over. Root scored 76 off 76 balls while Dawson hit a best of 68 off 83 deliveries as the pair rebuilt the innings to take England to a total of 258.
