Speculations about India’s top bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness were put to rest today as details emerged regarding his recent visit to the BCCI Center of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. Despite initial fears of a fresh injury just days before Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 kick-off, it has been confirmed that the presence of a pacemaker in the device is part of a carefully calibrated workload management programme.

The sight of Bumrah signing up for the CoE instead of joining Mumbai Indians’ pre-season camp at the Wankhede Stadium sent social media into a frenzy. However, it was made clear that the visit was a proactive rather than a reactive measure.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the BCCI medical team devised a specific strength and conditioning block for Bumrah in the CoE. The primary focus is to ensure he remains in top form for India’s white-ball tour of England in July, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs.
Crucially for Mumbai Indians fans, the 32-year-old continued his bowling practice in Bengaluru and did not stay away from the skills. He is expected to link up with the Hardik Pandya-led team in the coming days and remains firmly on track to feature in Mumbai’s first home match against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29, the report said.
The BCCI medical staff’s caution stems from Bumrah’s relentless schedule over the last quarter. Earlier this month, he was the undisputed leader of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup winning campaign, finishing with 14 scalps with the highest wicket. His masterclass in the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabadreturning figures of 4 for 15, remains the gold standard for T20 bowling, but such high-intensity shifts have required a period of scientific renewal.
Since his return from back surgery in 2025, the BCCI has been careful with Bumrah’s workload, often pulling him out of non-essential duties to maintain longevity. His 2025-26 schedule has already seen him handle a heavy workload in home Test series against the West Indies and South Africa ahead of the month’s World Cup.
For Mumbai Indians, Bumrah is the tactical axis around which their bowling unit revolves. Last season, despite the team’s inconsistent results, he remained a statistical anomaly, taking 18 wickets in 12 games with an economy rate of 6.67.
With the IPL 2026 season coming on the back of a high-scoring T20 World Cup in India, his ability to execute death on the batting-friendly Wankhede tracks is indispensable.
Bumrah’s impending arrival in the MI camp will provide a significant psychological boost to the side looking to regain its dominance. Mumbai Indians are looking to come up with a better show after being knocked out in the first game of the playoffs last year.
Bumrah will join a well-rounded bowling unit that also has the likes of Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar and Mitchell Santner among others.
