A wild elephant was found injured in Anakkulam, Malayattoor forest division. According to environmentalist MN Jayachandran, the male elephant was spotted in the Anakkulam river for the past two days with a deep gash on its trunk. The river is a frequent watering hole for wild elephants.
“It has deep injuries and is unable to eat. The elephant was seen standing in the river on Friday; at times it moves to the nearby forest before returning to the water. If the forest department does not provide treatment, it could lead to the death of the animal,” Mr. Jayachandran said.
He added that local residents also noticed the injured elephant in the area. “We have already alerted the forest department officials and hope they will find the animal to provide medical attention,” he said.
A senior official of the forest department confirmed that the elephant is currently camping near the boundary of Malayattoor reserve and Mankulam forest division. “Staff from both Mankulam and Malayattoor are working to track the animal. It was spotted in the Anakkulam river on Friday before it retreated into the forest. Based on our observations, the condition of the elephant is currently stable. If necessary, the department will take steps to provide treatment,” the official said.
