Several people took to the streets of Washington, New York, among others across the United States on Saturday, as part of the third annual “No Kings” rally. The participants are rallying against the policies of US President Donald Trump, the higher cost of living and the US conflict with Iran, according to reports.
Social media was full of people posting visuals of the marches. One video showed protesters in Washington DC carrying what appeared to be an inflatable effigy of Donald Trump and a handmade drawing of the US Constitution.
Another clip showed thousands of anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ protesters on the streets of Philadelphia.
What is the ‘No Kings’ protest?
The “No Kings” movement, which was launched last year on Trump’s birthday on June 14, drew an estimated 4 to 6 million people at about 2,100 locations across the country.
A second wave of protests in October included an estimated 7 million participants in more than 2,700 cities, according to a crowdsourced analysis published by prominent data journalist G. Elliott Morris. The October event was fueled largely by backlash against the government shutdown, an aggressive crackdown by federal immigration authorities and the deployment of National Guard troops to major cities.
Saturday’s marches mark the third year of the movement.
What does ‘No Kings’ mean
The protests are aimed at the use of unchecked presidential power – underscoring the principle that the US is a democracy – whose people elect their president.
“In June, we did what many said was impossible: peacefully mobilized millions of people to take to the streets and declare with one voice – America has no king. And that mattered. The world saw the power of the people. President Trump’s birthday parade was drowned out by protests in every state and around the world. His attempt to turn June 14 into a coronation against the authorial states collapsed and the uprising movement his authorship became the power of King No. website.
Ada Shen, an organizer of Paris No Kings, said: “I protest against all of Trump’s illegal, immoral, reckless and reckless endless wars.” It’s clear that he doesn’t really have a plan. It is clear that this is an abuse of power. It is abundantly clear that he is a strong man who is abusing the authority that the American people have invested in him as our president-elect.”
Earlier, a Reuters report mentioned that singers Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez will headline the rally in the Minnesota state capital, where more than 100,000 people are expected to gather.
The area has become the focus of Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
