The Indian Farmers’ Movement (Infam), a farmers’ organization founded under the leadership of the Catholic Church, celebrated its 25th anniversary on Saturday. A public meeting and assembly was held at Kattappana in Idukki to mark the Silver Jubilee.
Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan started a public meeting where he expressed the concerns of the farming community. “Farmers are facing an increase in wild animal attacks. Wild boars, elephants and monkeys pose a serious threat to the lives and property of our farmers,” he said.
The meeting was presided over by Mar Jose Pulickal, Bishop of Kanjirappally Eparchy under Syro-Malabar Church and Patron of Idukki District Infam. The meeting was attended by Infam State Secretary Mathew Mamparampil, Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose and Kattappana Municipal Chairman Joy Vettikkuzhi among others.
Organizers said thousands of farmers from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh participated in the rally. The event was officially flagged off in Kattappana by Infam National President Fr. Thomas Mattamundayil.
As part of the year-long Silver Jubilee celebrations, Infam plans to honor 1,500 farmers who have reached the age of 75. This initiative titled “Veer Kisan Bhoomipathra” will be held at Marian College auditorium in Kuttikkanam on January 20. The farmers’ meeting will be held in the parish hall of St. Mary’s 27, January in Kanjirally.
Infam was established in 2000 to protect farmers’ interests and address evolving challenges in the agricultural sector. Over the past 25 years, the movement has consistently provided assistance and advocacy to farmers across the state.
