Indonesia Open: Ayush Shetty scores sensational comeback win, HS Prannoy crashes out

Ayush Shetty recovered from a horror start to dig deep and secure a sensational comeback victory in the first round of the Indonesia Open on Wednesday June 3 against Weng Hongyang. HS Prannoy’s fight was not enough on the day as he crashed out of the tournament early with a three-game loss to Nhat Nguyen.

Ayush’s win came as a bit of a boost for the Indian contingent who saw Satwik-Chirag left the competition due to injury in the first round. The Indian ace didn’t have the best start to the game when he found himself on the back foot. Ayush took an early 5-2 lead but errors allowed his Chinese counterpart to bounce back and go on a six-point run.

While Ayush was able to break the streak, Weng took the lead into the break. The first game was only one-way after the restart as Weng made it 14-8 to seal it.

The second game was more of a close battle before Ayush could find his rhythm and start asserting his dominance on the field.

A four-point run made it 7-3 in favor of the Indian ace, but Weng returned it with a cut to take the lead.

It was Weng who took the lead at the break and things looked ominous for Ayush as they trailed 15-11. But that’s when the 21-year-old found his groove and the appetite to pile on the points quickly. He went on a six-point drive to take the lead before Weng fought back to push the game to extra points.

Ayush was able to push his limits and took the second game and carried that momentum into the third.

He raced to an 8-2 lead and there was no going back from there. Weng staged a comeback to reduce the deficit but Ayush was too strong for him to seal the victory. He will face Lee Cheuk Yiu in the round of 16.

PRANNOY’S FIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH

Earlier in the day, Prannoy lost to Nguyen 17-21, 21-16, 21-19 in a match that was close from the start. Prannoy’s early lead didn’t last long, but he ensured Nguyen didn’t run away in the match, recovering from an 8-16 deficit to bring things back to a point.

The two men traded points, but Nguyen was able to hold his nerve and take home the first match.

Prannoy again showed his resilience as he fought back from 2-8 to take the lead. While Nguyen put up some resistance after play resumed, it was all Prannoy and he took the second game.

Despite the Irish ace taking an early lead, Prannoy again went deep to restore parity and lead 17-15. But costly errors ultimately proved to be the Indian ace’s undoing and he was visibly frustrated on court.
