IndiGo, India’s largest airline, was facing a major operational crisis. The new standards for pilot rest periods affected more than 180 flights from major airports. The budget carrier, with its scheduling system in disarray, had difficulty managing scheduled flights. Widespread flight cancellations disrupted the travel plans of passengers and caused chaos at major airports across India.
Frustrated passengers were seen chanting and brawling as security staff struggled to control the chaos at the airport.
The delay entered its third day. Thousands of stranded passengers at major airports complained of disorganization, airline planning and lack of preparedness.
Describing the ordeal, one user said that IndiGo is currently in a terrible state. Flights are canceled one after the other, chaos at the gates, passengers arguing with the crew, zero communication. “My own flight was delayed, nothing is clear; we’ve been at the airport for two hours waiting for some update. If you’re flying today… Honestly, don’t go to the airport unless you really have to. It’s a mess.”
Another user said: “Never travel on IndiGo ✈️This situation presents significant problems and seems to be very disorganized at #Delhiairport @DelhiAirport. (sic)”
Another comment read: “Absolute chaos at Hyderabad airport at Indigo counters. People, frustrated by their own delay, are now preventing others from boarding. @IndiGo6E staff are being harassed left, right and centre. #Indigoairlines.”
IndiGo’s operational problems stem from strict Flight Time Limits (FDTL). India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has introduced these measures to combat pilot fatigue.
In compliance with DGCA rules, IndiGo has updated its safety norms, which has significantly affected its operations. Earlier this week, the airline clarified that the cancellations were due to “various factors including tighter flight service limits”.
