IndiGo’s massive operational crisis, now in its sixth day, has left passengers facing chaos and growing frustration over disrupted travel plans. The airline’s struggles as India’s largest carrier have also pushed up ticket prices significantly, fueling turbulence among fliers across the country.
As of Sunday, December 7, IndiGo has canceled 650 flights for the day. However, the airline said in a recent statement that the situation is gradually stabilizing, with 137 of the airport’s 138 destinations now operating at full capacity.
Are you entitled to a refund?
The low-cost carrier notified affected passengers on Sunday 7 December that they will be entitled to a full refund for all cancellations and rebooking requests with travel dates between 5 December 2025 and 15 December 2025.
According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) rules, if delays or cancellations are caused by the airline, passengers are entitled to a refund or rebooking.
How to request a refund?
Here are the complete steps you need to follow to claim a refund for a canceled or delayed IndiGo booking:
— Open IndiGo official website or mobile app and go to “Manage Booking” option. To check the status of your flight, enter your PNR or booking reference number and your last name.
— If the airline cancels your flight, you can either request a full refund or rebook on the next available flight without additional fees. For domestic flights delayed by more than six hours, you are entitled to choose between a replacement flight departing within six hours or a full refund.
— After assessing your situation, go to the IndiGo refund page and select “Cancellation / Canceled Flight Refund”. Then just enter your PNR, Email ID and passenger details and submit your request.
How are these refunds processed?
If you paid for your flight reservation online, the refund will be processed back to the same card or payment method you used, usually within 5-7 business days.
However, if you paid in cash, you must visit the airport counter where you made your reservation. As soon as you present a valid ticket and proof of identity, they will start the refund.
Refunds for bookings made through third party agents or portals should be processed by these agencies upon receipt of a refund request from the passenger.
Refunds processed by the airline so far
The Civil Aviation Ministry on Sunday said that IndiGo has so far processed refunds of Rs ₹610 crore for passengers affected by widespread flight disruptions and delays.
Till Saturday, IndiGo had returned around 3,000 pieces of luggage to passengers across the country, Mint reported in an earlier report.
This comes after the government directed IndiGo to complete the process of refunding tickets for canceled flights by Sunday evening and ensure that it delivers luggage separated from passengers to their preferred address in the next two days.
