Beleaguered IndiGo was forced to cancel nearly 550 flights over a three-day period on Thursday, leaving thousands of passengers across the country frustrated and waiting at airports.
As passengers waited and waited a while longer for flights to resume, many missed important appointments, lost hope of reaching loved ones suffering medical emergencies, and missed out on some of the most precious memories of their lives.
Among those IndiGo passengers was a techie couple from Karnataka’s Hubballi who had to miss their own wedding reception. However, according to an NDTV report, the couple still managed to be a part of their post-wedding function, just virtually.
The newlyweds, both software engineers working in Bengaluru, were scheduled to fly to Gujarat Bhavan in Hubballi, but the cancellation of the IndiGo flight prevented them from traveling.
Medhak kshirsagar of hubblili and sangama das of udisha were marked in Bhubaneswar on 23 November. A formal reception was held in the bride’s hometown on Wednesday.
According to an NDTV report, the bride and groom have booked flights from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru and onward to Hubballi on December 2.
The couple were stranded after their IndiGo flights were repeatedly delayed from 9 am on Tuesday to the early hours of the next day. The flight was eventually canceled on December 3.
Several of the couple’s traveling relatives also faced cancellation.
However, once the guests had gathered and all the preparations were in place, the parents of the bride intervened and took the couple’s place for the rituals. The bride and groom, fully dressed for the occasion, joined the reception in Bhubaneswar via video conference, according to an NDTV report.
“The wedding was on November 23 and we had planned the reception on December 3. But suddenly at 4 am the flight was cancelled. We were still hoping they would make it, but they couldn’t,” the bride’s mother told NDTV.
She said they felt very bad and because they had invited so many relatives, it was not possible to cancel the event at the last minute. “So after discussion as a family, we decided that the couple would attend the reception online and broadcast their attendance on screen,” she added.
