IndiGo crisis: Budget carrier IndiGo’s operations have stabilized in the days following government intervention after thousands of flights were canceled last week for various airline operational reasons, including the latest additions to the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations.
As of Friday, December 12, IndiGo was operating more than 2,000 flights a day as the airline said it remains focused on compensating passengers who were severely affected by the IndiGo flight cancellations.
Here are the latest updates and news about IndiGo flight cancellation.
IndiGo to provide ₹compensation of 500 million crowns
In a statement on Friday, IndiGo said it will compensate more than ₹500 crore in total to severely affected customers whose flights were canceled within 24 hours of departure and left stranded at airports across the country.
“Our aim is to make this (refund) process as transparent, easy and hassle-free as possible for you. We will be compensated which, according to our current estimate, will exceed ₹$500 million to customers whose flights were canceled within 24 hours of departure and/or customers severely stranded at some airports,” IndiGo said in a statement.
Identification of severely disabled passengers
IndiGo further said in its statement that it is in the process of “identifying flights where customers were severely affected and stranded at airports on December 3, 4 and 5” and “will reach out to all such customers in January so that compensation can be extended smoothly”.
160 flights were canceled on Friday
IndiGo on Friday canceled around 160 flights from two key airports, Delhi and Bengaluru, as the disruption continued, PTI reported, citing two people familiar with the development. “IndiGo canceled 159 flights from Delhi and Bengaluru on Friday,” sources said.
Focus on refunds
IndiGo said it is focusing on immediate refunds. “At this stage, our primary objective is to ensure that all refunds for affected customers are processed efficiently, quickly and with utmost urgency by December 2025. Most of them have already been completed and the remaining will be reflected soon,” IndiGo said on X.
IndiGo operates more than 2000 flights
IndiGo said it operated more than 2,000 flights on Friday under its revised “reduced” schedule. Under the winter flight schedule, which began in the last week of October and will last until the last week of March next year, IndiGo has been allowed to operate 15,014 flights per week or 2,144 flights per day on domestic routes. “IndiGo is scheduled to operate over 2,000 flights today, as per its revised reduced schedule,” the airline said.
An experienced aviation professional to conduct an independent review
IndiGo’s board on Friday announced the appointment of an external aviation expert to analyze the root causes of recent flight disruptions. An independent aviation expert will begin the review at the earliest and submit a comprehensive report to the board, IndiGo said in a statement. “Chief Aviation Advisors LLC, under the direction of Capt. John Illson, a veteran aviation expert, will conduct an independent professional review and assessment of the recent disruption and the factors that contributed to it,” the airline said.
