India’s SAFF plans are in doubt as the New Zealand tour creates a scheduling conflict

India’s participation in the upcoming SAFF Championship remains uncertain as scheduling conflicts and player availability pose a challenge to the AIFF. The federation’s plans are complicated by the senior team’s proposed tour to New Zealand, leaving questions about squad selection and whether India can field a team for the regional tournament.

The SAFF Championship is scheduled to be held in Dhaka from November 4 to 17. India, the nine-time champions and the most successful team in the competition’s history, are in Group B alongside Pakistan and the Maldives. As per the current schedule, India are scheduled to face Maldives on November 5 and Pakistan on November 11.

The uncertainty stems from India’s planned tour of New Zealand, where the senior team is expected to play two international friendlies on November 12 and 15. The matches will mark 100 years of sporting relations between the two countries and will give India an opportunity to take on New Zealand, who have featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

WHY THE SAFF CHAMPIONSHIP INTERACTS WITH INDIA’S PLANS

According to reports, the AIFF initially considered sending the Under-23 team to the SAFF Championship while the senior team traveled to New Zealand. However, the tournament starts on November 4, five days before FIFA’s international window opens on November 9, which presents a major hurdle for team selection.

The FIFA window runs from November 9 to 17 and overlaps with the second part of the SAFF Championship. This means that clubs are not required to release their players for the opening matches of the tournament, so the AIFF will struggle to field a competitive squad. With the Indian Super League season underway, clubs may be reluctant to release players before the start of the international window.

There is also uncertainty over whether the SAFF would accept the India Under-23 team given that the tournament is a FIFA Tier 1 competition and its results contribute to the FIFA rankings.

The timing is particularly striking as the SAFF Championship was reportedly moved from September to November to accommodate India’s participation. The overlap with friendlies in New Zealand has now raised uncertainty over whether the defending champions will be able to take part.

ELIMINATION OF FIFA ASEAN CUP ADDS CONTEXT

The situation also evokes memories of India’s withdrawal from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup amid scheduling conflicts with high-profile friendlies against Brazil and Uruguay in October. The decision raised questions about how the AIFF would balance regional competitions with other international commitments.

India is not the only team facing uncertainty. Nepal’s participation is also in doubt due to its FIFA suspension. Any Indian withdrawal would further affect the tournament lineup.

The AIFF is yet to announce a final decision on India’s participation. The federation must weigh the value of defending its regional title against the commitments of the senior team in New Zealand, while also resolving issues around club releases and the eligibility of the U-23 squad. Until there is an official update, India’s plans for the tournament in Dhaka remain unclear.
