
India fulfilled their dream on Sunday, March 8 by successfully defending their Men’s Under-20 World Cup title. In an impressive display at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, Suryakumar Yadav’s team secured a 96-run victory in front of a packed crowd.
Earlier, India Women’s team suffered a 10-wicket defeat in the day-night Test against Australia in Perth. After a disappointing start to the day for the fans, the men’s team gave them plenty to cheer for and produced a memorable performance at the same stadium where they faced heartbreak in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia.

Asked to bat first, India posted a massive 255 for five. Sanju Samson continued his stellar form scoring 89 off 46 balls with five fours and eight sixes. Abhishek Sharma fired on all cylinders under pressure, hit the fastest fifty in T20 World Cup knockout history.
Ishan Kishan kept the momentum going with a 25-ball fifty, while James Neesham slowed India down briefly by taking three wickets in the 16th over. Shivam Dube’s cameo of 26 off eight balls took India past the 250-run mark to seal an impressive total.
Chasing the challenging target of 256, Finn Allen, who he recently scored a 33-ball century against South Africahe fell cheaply while Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips also departed in single figures. New Zealand could only manage 52 runs for the loss of three wickets in the powerplay.
The dismissal of Tim Seifert for 52 in the ninth over effectively sealed the match for India. Jasprit Bumrah tore through the Kiwi middle order to finish with excellent figures of 4-0-15-4. Riding on the devastating spell of Bumrah, India bowled out New Zealand for 159 in just 19 overs, leaving the visitors well short and giving India a final triumph.

89 – Sanju Samson created the record for the highest individual score in the history of T20 World Cup finals. He passed Marlon Samuels’ 85 against England in Kolkata in 2016.
321 – Sanju Samson sets the record for most runs by an Indian in a single edition of the Men’s T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli passed 319 in 2014.
2 – India became only the second team to score three 250-plus runs in a T20 competition. Sunrisers Hyderabad reached 2024 in Indian Premier League.
