An Indiana couple, Melody Rose Greenwood, 38, and Adam Jon Greenwood, 36, face preliminary charges of neglecting a dependent following allegations of horrific abuse and mistreatment of their 10-year-old son. The accusations include nutritional neglect, physical restraint, and encouraging siblings to physically harm the child.
The abuse came to light when the boy was taken to Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital for an examination. Doctors reportedly found evidence of severe malnutrition and signs of abuse, as detailed by the Muncie Star Press. Police were alerted to the potential abuse after suspicions were raised.
According to reports, the child was subjected to extreme mistreatment. He was allegedly forced to stand against a wall for up to 12 hours a day, with a towel covering his head to prevent him from watching television. His siblings were reportedly instructed to “beat” him if he moved or spoke. The boy’s diet consisted solely of canned foods like beans, tomatoes, and soup, while other family members ate regular meals such as cheeseburgers and fast food.
The child also disclosed that his mother used zip ties to restrain him, causing pain due to their tightness. He reported being tied to his bed with his hands behind his back and left in that position overnight. Police noted visible scars and marks on his wrists consistent with restraint.
The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) has been investigating the case, interviewing seven victims who corroborated the allegations. The DCS findings revealed that the boy’s siblings were primarily responsible for educating the younger children. Homeschooling reportedly consisted only of reading three chapters of a book each day while their parents were at work.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Melody Greenwood faces three preliminary counts of neglecting a dependent and was released on a $15,000 bond. Adam Greenwood has been charged with two counts of the same offense and was released on a $10,000 bond. Delaware County District Attorney Eric Hoffman will determine whether formal charges will be filed against the couple.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to the severity of the allegations and the ongoing investigation into the family’s treatment of the children. Authorities continue to gather evidence to ensure justice is served.
