The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a review of the Under-19 Asia Cup performance, Cricbuzz reported on Monday, December 22. The board has sought a report from the team management and is expected to meet captain Ayush Mhatra and coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar in the coming days.
The decision was reportedly taken during the BCCI Apex Council meeting on Monday and comes after India’s disastrous performance in the final of the tournament. Unbeaten till the final, the Indian U19 team suffered a massive 191-run defeat against Pakistan.
IND vs PAK U19 Asian Cup Final: Highlights
Key players Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to deliver on the day, contributing to what turned out to be an off day for the entire Indian side. While performance reviews are standard after major tournaments, the BCCI’s decision to meet both the captain and the head coach is unusual.
Earlier this year, a similar approach was adopted when the board held discussions with Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma following the senior team’s disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia.
According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s proactive approach may be aimed at the upcoming Under-19 World Cup, which is scheduled for January-February 2026. The board seems keen to address any issues early and avoid setbacks in the global tournament.
Pakistan stunned India in the U-19 Asia Cup final
The final of the Asia Under-19 Cup 2025 in Dubai turned out to be a nightmare for India as Pakistan defeated their arch-rivals by 191 runs in a one-sided match at the ICC Academy Ground. Opener Sameer Minhas laid the foundation with a scintillating 71-ball century on December 21 and Farhan Yousaf’s side finished the match by bowling India out for just 156 in 26.2 overs.
