An Indian truck driver who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in West Virginia has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), multiple media reports said.
The truck driver, named Sukhjinder Singh, was booked into ICE’s South Central Regional Jail on Nov. 24 at 1:30 p.m. West Virginia time, WBOY reports.
However, it is not known from where exactly Singh was arrested and why he was taken into custody. WBOY reported the driver is being held without bail.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation, which sought to clarify the immigration status of the arrested driver.
Fatal crash
The 37-year-old driver was previously arrested this March in connection with a fatal Jan. 19 crash on I-68 that killed Kevin Lataille after Singh’s truck struck his car and pushed it into Cheat Lake.
Lataille’s body was pulled from the lake on January 26 after several days of searching.
Singh was subsequently interviewed by police on February 28, after which he was charged with negligent homicide after investigators determined he was driving at an unsafe speed when the fatal I-68 crash occurred.
While Singh fled West Virginia at the time, he was later apprehended from California.
The 37-year-old then pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a year in prison, in addition to a $1,000 fine, in October this year.
“The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office has received confirmation from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office that Singh Sukhjinder has refused to surrender on his warrant for negligent homicide,” a Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office news release said.
“At this time, we are working closely with the Monongalia County District Attorney’s Office to secure the governor’s warrant through the office of Governor Patrick Morrisey. We remain committed to ensuring that justice is served and will provide additional updates as this process progresses,” it added.
