The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has received several statements from Indian students and their families, which indicated difficulty in obtaining US student visa appointments after the US authorities announced extended screening and examination for visa applicants, the government said on Thursday (July 24, 2025).
In a written response to Rajya Sabha, the Foreign Minister for external affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also said that Mea has taken up matters with the US Embassy in Nový Dilli and the US Foreign Ministry.
The ministry was asked whether the government is aware that US student visas are facing potential Indian students.
“On June 18, 2025, the US Foreign Ministry (DOS) issued a press release entitled” Notification of extended screening and checking for visa applicants “. In the DOS press release, he stated that in all available information in his visa screening and testing he identifies visa applicants who are inadmissible to the US, including those who represent that US national security.
According to new instructions, the US would perform a comprehensive and thorough examination, including online presence, all candidates for visitors to students and exchange in classifications F, M and J.
To facilitate this screening, all applicants for visas F, M and J non -Iimigrant visas would be instructed to adjust the protection of personal data protection on their social media profiles to the “public”.
“After this development, the Ministry of Outside received several statements from Indian students and their families, which indicated difficulty in obtaining student visa meetings. The Ministry took up matters with the US Embassy in Nový Dilli and the US Foreign Ministry,” Mr. Singh said.
While issuing visas is a sovereign privilege of the state concerned, Mea has “constantly increased” with the US Embassy in Nový Delhi and the US Foreign Ministry in Washington DC, facing future Indian students in obtaining American visa, he added.
“The Indian government continues to be involved in the US government in support of the mutually beneficial and safe mobility framework that enables streamlining paths for the legal mobility of students and professionals and facilitating short -term hiking and trade routes,” Singh said.
In a written response to a separate question, MOS said that the Indian government remains cooperated with the United States on “addressing illegal immigration and trading by people by taking strong steps against bad actors, criminal facilitators and illegal immigration networks”.
In a separate question, Mea was asked whether the government realized illegal immigration missiles operating in a country that fraudulently sends Indians abroad, causing money and national reputation.
The Ministry publishes advice through the emigra portal, social media clicks and other publicity ways about the dangers of false work missiles and ways to prevent it. “By June 2025, a total of 3,505 illegal agents in the country were announced on the emigrate portal,” Singh said.
