The renowned geneticist and founding director of the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics P. Majumder warned the Indian scientific community of growing concern about insufficient strictness and ethics in research.

He emphasized the need for corrective measures.
Majumder has shown a growing degree of withdrawal of scientific works as an index of lack of strictness and ethics in research. “The ratio of withdrawal of scientific papers in India is more than in the US, this is the main reason for concern,” he said.
Dr. Majumder said that proliferations of predatory magazines, plagiarism, data production and falsification were key factors threatening strictness and ethics in scientific research.
“Plagiarism represents 27%due to lack of quality in biomedical research. While falsification and data production accounts for 27.5%, duplicate publications are 21%,” he said, warning that lack of quality is becoming increasingly the main problem of scientific research in India.
“In many cases, emphasis is placed on the number of publications rather than quality. The impact on the fact that the evaluation of H-Index and NIRF contributes elements,” he said.
Dr. Majumder said that a great emphasis was on the number of publications in the NIRF ranking. “There is no emphasis on quality and no penalty for download,” he said. “The institutions are silent. In fact, all these unethical practices are carried out with the silent consent of the institution,” he said.
