In an effort to promote local talent, Indian Railways will be sponsoring the newly launched online store ‘Aabhar’ which will showcase a range of exquisite gift items made by tribals, handloom weavers and others under One District One Product (ODOP) and Geographical Indication (GI).
The online store operated by Government e-Marketplace (GeM) sources gift items exclusively from Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE), Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and various Central and State Handicraft and Handloom Emporium.
Promoted by the “Vocal for Local” campaign, the store would offer a variety of items and baskets that could be used at official events, ceremonies and functions. The aim is to promote social inclusion and encourage local artisans and traditional industries.
Support a rich heritage
Sharing the details of the website and liaison officers to facilitate the purchase, the Railway Board referred to a note issued by the Director General of GeM, which said that the initiative was also aimed at promoting India’s rich heritage through handlooms, handicrafts, handicrafts, etc., by providing market access to local artisans, rural entrepreneurs and women-led businesses. GeM is focused on supporting sustainable and inclusive economic development.
Apart from railways, GeM urged other Ministries/Departments and Public Sector Undertakings to purchase articles from Aabhar online store for donation at official events including honoring foreign dignitaries and employees at retiring functions.
To provide a market for local/indigenous products and create additional income opportunities for the marginalized sections of the society, the Railways launched ‘One Station One Product’ (OSOP) program a few years back on its network where items including artefacts made by indigenous tribes, handlooms of local weavers, handicrafts like world famous wood carving, chikankari and zari-zardozi were showcased.
