Indian pacer fined by ICC after women’s Asia Cup triumph

Indian pacer Kranti Gaud has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and given one point for breaching the Code of Conduct during Sunday’s Women’s Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka in Dubai.

Gaud accepted the sanction, which was imposed after she was found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct at Level 1. The article refers to “the use of language, actions or gestures which disparage or are likely to provoke an aggressive response from a batsman during his/her dismissal during an international match”.

The incident occurred during the Sri Lankan chase when Gaud dismissed opener Imesh Dulani. The Indian pacer pointed to the pavilion during his celebration, a gesture deemed a breach of the Code of Conduct by the umpires.

A Level 1 breach carries a minimum penalty of an official caution and can result in a fine of up to 50 per cent of the player’s match fee along with one or two demerit points. The deficit point is Gaud’s first in a 24-month period.

The disciplinary action came after India produced a dominant performance in the final to beat Sri Lanka by 72 runs and secure a record eighth Women’s Asian Cup title.

India bat first at 183/5, with openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana providing the platform for a formidable total. Both batsmen scored half-centuries as India put Sri Lanka under considerable pressure from the start.

Gaud then gave India an early breakthrough with the ball, dismissing Dulani during Sri Lanka’s chase. However, it was India’s spin attack that eventually dismantled the hosts’ batting line-up. Shree Charani was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/20 while Deepti Sharma took 3/19 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 111.

The final also saw off-field controversy, with Indian team decided not to collect the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board President Mohsin Naqviwho was present at the ceremony.

The decision came amid heightened political tensions between India and Pakistan, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deciding that the team would not receive the trophy from Naqvi.
