The Indian Navy commissioned INS Anjadip on Friday. It is a warship and an indigenous anti-submarine vessel aimed at augmenting the anti-submarine warfare and coastal surveillance capabilities of the Indian Navy.
In an official ceremony held at Chennai Port, Admiral Tripathi formally commissioned the ship in the presence of senior Navy and Government officials and other senior officials. Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi commissioned the ship at Chennai Port.
This is the third of eight vessels being built under the Shallow Water Anti-Submarine Warfare Project.
what’s in a name
INS Anjadip is named after an island off the coast of Karwar in northern Karnataka in the Arabian Sea.
Why is it called “Dolphin Hunter”?
The vessel is designed to act as a “Dolphin Hunter”, aimed at detecting, tracking and neutralizing enemy submarines in coastal areas, news agency PTI reported.
The ship is loaded with indigenous, cutting-edge anti-submarine warfare.
The 77-meter-long ship is equipped with a high-speed waterjet drive that allows it to reach a maximum speed of 25 knots for quick response and continuous operation.
Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata, INS Anjadip is a state-of-the-art vessel specially designed to meet the challenges of the littoral combat environment – coastal and shallow waters vital to national security, the Navy said.
In addition to the anti-submarine warfare role, the warship is also equipped to conduct coastal surveillance, low-intensity maritime operations, and search and rescue operations.
The ship is loaded with indigenous, state-of-the-art anti-submarine weapons and sensors, including the hull-mounted Abhay sonar, and is armed with light torpedoes and ASW missiles.
The induction of INS Anjadip strengthens the Navy’s capability to protect India’s vast maritime interests and coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
In his speech, Admiral Tripathi said the Navy plans to induct 15 more ships this year, apart from INS Anjadip.
Highlighting the state-of-the-art features in the newly launched ship, he said that INS Anjadip is designed for agility and combat readiness.
He said of the concept of self-confidence that “from an Indian perspective, self-confidence or atma nirbharta in India is beyond Make; it is confidence in India”.
He also highlighted the active role of the Indian Navy in ensuring the security of the country’s maritime trade.
