Indian Envoy Meets Bangladesh Spokesperson; discusses parliamentary ties

Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday (September 2, 2026) met the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Bangladesh and discussed ways to deepen engagement between the legislatures of the two countries.

Mr Trivedi met Speaker Maj Gen (Retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad and Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal at the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament), the Indian High Commission said in a social media post here.

During the meeting, the envoy emphasized that the involvement of both parliaments is essential for strengthening people-to-people ties between two sovereign and democratic countries.

“Discussions included the possibilities of creating parliamentary friendship groups, mutual visits of parliamentary delegations led by both presidents, cooperation between parliamentary committees and digitization of parliamentary records,” the mission said.

He reiterated the invitation, on behalf of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, to distinguished dignitaries to visit India as soon as possible.

Speaking to reporters after the meetings, Mr. Trivedi said it was entirely Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s prerogative if he visited Delhi in response to his counterpart Narendra Modi’s invitation.

“That is left to the prerogative of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh is a very intelligent person. He is for the people. I think we should leave it to the Prime Minister,” he told reporters when asked about Mr Rahman’s visit to India.

He also said that the intentions of both sides in deepening bilateral relations remain “people-oriented” and “when it appears to be a people-oriented matter, then what must happen will happen.”

The Bangladesh government is seeking the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Prime Minister Modi sent a congratulatory message to Mr. Rahman during his inauguration on February 17 through Birla spokesman and invited him to visit India along with his family.

The second invitation came at the same time as the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12-13.

Asked about the progress in resuming talks between Bangladesh and India, Mr. Trivedi said that in a democracy, discussions do not end. “If the discussion ends, then it is not a democracy,” he said.

Mr. Trivedi last month expressed hope that the visit of the Bangladeshi prime minister to India should take place as soon as possible, as direct engagement of the leaders of the two countries can help resolve bilateral issues.
